Main purpose of job:

To support the Embassy by collating information and providing analysis on politics and the economy in Djibouti. Manage the Embassy’s communications, both with the traditional media and new online media. Support the administrative process of delivering projects in Djibouti with UK funding. Support any other aspect of the Embassy’s work as and when required.

Roles and responsibilities:

Political and Economic

  • Ensure the British Embassy has good contacts across all relevant government departments, institutions, NGOs, media and other organisations.
  • Provide timely, well sourced and accurate reporting on political and economic developments in Djibouti as directed by the Ambassador.
  • Set up and maintain a contacts spreadsheet.

 Communications

  • Lead on developing and implementing a communications plan, identifying opportunities for the UK to demonstrate the strength of its partnership with Djibouti.
  • Manage the Embassy’s website and social media accounts, including drafting posts and creating content.

 Programmes

  • Provide administrative support to deliver the Embassy’s development projects in Djibouti, including completing forms and setting up payments.
  • Liaise with project implementing partners to monitor delivery against agreed objectives.

The precise nature of the tasks may change as the Embassy continues to develop – flexibility, confidence and a can-do attitude are key.

  • Experience of political reporting (for example, in government, for an international organisation or through the media)
  • Proficient use of social media (e.g. X (twitter) and Facebook)
  • Proficient use of IT, including Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • University (Bachelor’s) degree
  • Excellent and proven organisational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines
  • Resourcefulness in solving problems
  • Superior professionalism and judgement
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively with other staff members as part of a team; respecting others, supporting them and taking on the work of other staff when they are on leave.
  • Level of language skills required: Fluency in English and French– speaking, listening, reading and writing

  • Experience of working in an Embassy, UN agency or international organisation
  • Experience of economic reporting

Learning and development opportunities:

The position offers many opportunities for learning and development on the job, including through contact with colleagues, external interlocutors and attendance at events. Online learning programmes are available through our UK and regional Learning & Development teams. There may be an opportunity to attend training in the UK or other countries in the region.

This is a full-time position working 41 hours per week.  Normal Embassy opening hours are between 0800 and 1615 from Sunday to Thursday. It is possible that the working hours pattern might change in the future according to the needs of the mission but this will not exceed the 41 hours per week

The British Embassy in Djibouti is relatively new and our work will evolve.  The successful candidate will be flexible and creative in helping us to create an impact. They will demonstrate the Embassy’s values of respect, kindness and integrity through their work, attitude and behaviour.
