Who we are
The British Embassy in Skopje is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Political and Economic Officer to support the Embassy by collating information and providing analysis on the politics and economy in North Macedonia.
About the role
Our new Political & Economic Officer’s main responsibilities will be to drive the Embassy’s political and economic goals; building and maintaining the networks to do this; and understanding and reporting on developments.
Main responsibilities will include:
Political
- Monitor media and news trends sharing news coverage within the embassy and Western Balkans network on key issues of interest to the UK-North Macedonia relationship, with written media coverage summaries as requested.
- Provide timely, well sourced and accurately researched in-depth reporting on political developments in North Macedonia as directed by the Ambassador and Country Business Plan.
Engagement
- Build and maintain an extensive network of contacts to support delivery of the Country Business Plan, across all relevant government departments, parliament, institutions, NGOs, media, the private sector and other organisations.
- Represent the embassy at external events related to the Country Business Plan, reporting on developments.
Economic
- Understand and report on the state of North Macedonia’s economy and the government’s economic priorities and their relevance to the broader political situation building relationships with stakeholders such as IFIs.
- Provide political support to the British Business Association to help drive growth of the trade relationship between the UK and North Macedonia.
Cross-network working
- Translation and/or note taking at other meetings, assigning and following up on actions.
- Assist in planning and developing inward and outward visits to support Embassy objectives.
- Take an active role in the Embassy’s crisis response plan and crisis exercises, and at least one of its corporate networks.
- Support any other aspect of the Embassy’s work as and when required.

- Full professional proficiency in English and Macedonian (both written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- At least 5 years’ experience working with government or public sector stakeholders;
- Strong understanding of North Macedonia’s political and economic landscape;
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, influencing and networking skills, with an ability to report clearly on complex issues;
- Stakeholder and client relationship management experience, with a demonstrated ability to develop senior-level relationships across business, government and other stakeholders;
- Ability to work in a diverse and cross-cultural environment, collaborating effectively across teams and departments;
- Highly organised, analytical, and proactive, with the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment;
- A college/university-level degree in a relevant area or equivalent professional experience;
- Strong IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office applications, AI tools and the Internet.

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract with a duration of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Skopje are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local (Republic of North Macedonia) employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Republic of North Macedonia and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
