Main Purpose of Job:

The British Embassy in Mexico is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We have an exciting opportunity for three Political Interns to join the Embassy’s Political Section.

The purpose of the Political Internship is to provide analytical, policy and administrative support to achieve UK objectives in Mexico. The jobholder will support the whole Political Section, which covers topics including foreign policy, domestic politcs, anti-corruption, rule of law, human rights, gender and equalities, and other UK priority issues.  The role will involve working with a wide range of stakeholders, including civil society organisations, academics, and Mexican Government officials to organise meetings, generate ideas for collaboration, draft analysis and reports as well as support with the running of projects. The succesful candidate will also support the organisation of events and visits.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The British Embassy in Mexico City is looking for three Political Interns to support the work of the Foreign Policy, Domestic Politics, and Rule of Law teams.  These are varied and challenging positions, which cover a wide range of political and project related tasks as well as administrative duties. While primarily working with the assigned team, the job will involve engaging with most sections of the Embassy and a range of external contacts in Mexico and the UK. The successful candidate should be able to work well in a fast-paced environment and be flexible to support competing priorities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Liaison with external stakeholders including civil society organisations and Mexican Government departments (at both federal and local level) to organise meetings and events.

2. Support project and programme design and implementation for UK Embassy priorities.

3. Analysis and drafting reports on UK priorities in Mexico, including elections, foreign policy, anti-corruption, and security.

4. Support on strategies related to UK priorities (e.g., elections, multilateral forums)

5. Support the wider Political, Press and Public Affairs Section with planning and organizing official events hosted by the Embassy.

6. Performing administrative duties: taking meeting notes, budget support, drafting correspondence, and providing overall administrative support for the assigned team’s daily tasks and events. 

All employees of the Embassy network are expected to contribute to the corporate activity of the organization.

  • A university-degree level course in or related to Political Science  or equivalent (government, public administration, international relations, etc.). Students in the last semester will also be considered. Students in Master’s programmes will not be considered.
  • Knowledge and interest in political issues within Mexico and internationally, particularly related to foreign policy, domestic politics, rule of law or human rights
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Spanish.
  • Proactive and creative self-starter, and interest in learning new skills, prioritising self development.
  • Organisation and time management skills, with a high-level attention to detail.
  • Excellent teamwork approach– works collaboratively across teams, as well as being able to work independently.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish (spoken and written). No certification is required but this will be assessed at the interview stage.
  • A general understanding of the Microsoft Suite (Word, Excell, Outlook, Microsoft Teams) or ability to learn.

  • Experience or strong interest in UK-Mexico relations.
  • Experience working in international affairs.
  • Experience or strong interest in global issues (e.g. human rights, UN, Open Government, transparency, etc.)

Physical requirements:

  • Prolongued periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Setting up exhibitions and events may sometimes be physically demanding.

Working Patterns:

Hybrid. The jobholder can work from home up to two days a week prior agreement with Line Manager on specific days but will need to be able to attend the office in-person at least three times a week.

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right. The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks. Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount. Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 6-12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.

  • Please note that to be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship (Master’s in the UK) you must not be an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee (as of June 2016) of Her Majesty’s Government (including British Embassies / High Commissions). You will not be able to apply for a Chevening Scholarship for two years after ending your contract with the Embassy.
  • This is a paid internship.
  • The successful candidate must be able to work at least three days (out of five) at the Embassy’s premises in Mexico City. Some diplomatic events could extend longer than regular office hours (e.g. King’s Birthday Party). Thus, residing in Mexico City is not a requirement but it is strongly regarded as an advantage.
