The UK Mission to the European Union (UKMis) is part of a world-wide network of nearly 270 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are looking for a Political Officer who will be a key member of the team, supporting our mission to provide expert and authoritative insight on the politics on processes of the EU institutions.

The Political Officer will also manage the briefing ahead of meetings between the UK’s Ambassador & Deputy Ambassador and their EU counterparts, and will be responsible for monitoring and reporting key EU institutional milestones. You will also be expected to build a network of contacts in order to support engagement on key UK priorities, as well as contributing to high level events hosted by the UKMis.  Under the guidance of the HEO/ Senior Political Officer, you will be expected to provide insight into current thinking on the big topics of the day as well as providing early notice of topics which are likely to be moving up the Brussels agenda.

The Political Officer’s expertise will help UKMis and Whitehall colleagues understand how debates and decisions within the Council and Commission affects their work. You will also provide advice on effective engagement and highlight forthcoming opportunities/risks.

The successful candidate will need to have a keen interest in, and knowledge of, EU institutions and politics and be an effective networker able to quickly build a range of useful contacts. Being able to draft clear, timely and insightful reports, often to tight deadlines, is a core skill for the role, as is being a team player, with a flexible and co-operative approach to collaborating with colleagues.

Reporting and analysis: You will provide timely reports on key institutional events, meetings, think tank discussions etc. You will also be encouraged to provide, or contribute to, analysis for colleagues in London on the key issues in the EU and their implications for the UK-EU relationship.

Networking: Access to information and opinion is key to this role and you will need to build and maintain an effective network of stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds, including the EU institutions and Member States.

Briefing and Strategy Input: You will provide, or co-ordinate, briefing for senior UKMis officials ahead of their meetings in Brussels, as well as feeding into briefing for Ministerial visits. By participating in meetings or commenting on papers, you will also influence political analysis within UKMis and strategic planning.

Internal Stakeholder Management: To effectively deliver your objectives you will need to build and manage relationships with key stakeholders including policy teams within UKMis and the FCDO in London. You will also be reasonable for day to day contact with the Devolved Administrations and Crown Dependencies in Brussels.

Corporate Responsibility: The job holder will be expected to take on one of the corporate roles in UKMis, which will provide opportunities for development as well as widening their contacts across HMG’s representation in Brussels

This is not an exhaustive list, and the post holder will be required to be flexible as the UK-EU relationship develops and the landscape evolves.

  • Proven track record of political and/or policy reporting
  • Strong political analysis skills
  • Good drafting ability
  • Strong knowledge of the structures and processes of the EU Institutions

  • French or any other European language skills are an asset
  • Experience of working with and/or in EU institutions
  • Proven ability of building and using a network of contacts

This is a permanent, full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. The monthly gross salary for this position is € 5,166.65 (EO) level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.

Learning & Development

The UK Mission to EU has an extensive learning and development offer built around supporting employees to develop their diplomatic skills and strengthen their understanding of the EU institutions. You may also bid for small amounts of funding to undertake more targeted individual learning opportunities. All staff are also expected to complete a small number of short mandatory courses on joining the mission.

The UK Mission to EU promotes flexible working opportunities where business needs allow, including occasional working from home. The UK Mission to EU operates a Time Off In Lieu (TOIL) system to allow employees to balance their hours across longer periods.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
