The British Embassy in Azerbaijan is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Press and Public Affairs Officer

This is an exciting opportunity for a creative and dynamic Communications professional to join the  British Embassy in Baku as the Press and Public Affairs Officer. You will play a pivotal role in shaping and implementing the Embassy’s communications strategy utilising well-researched communication campaigns, public diplomacy funding and our social media platforms to ensure targeted, coherent, engaging and high impact messages for diverse audiences. 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a communications strategy which supports the Embassy’s objectives through engagement of decision-makers, influencers, and wider audiences. This should include: a creative and targeted approach to the production of original digital content, and insight and evaluation to monitor the impact of the strategy.
  • Manage and enhance the Embassy’s comms, including on social media, by providing expert advice and building comms capability for the Ambassador and Embassy teams.
  • Develop and maintain a professional network that allows you to lead on securing media interviews, distribute press releases and convene journalists for large events – using your understanding of the local media environment to maximise opportunities and impact.
  • Lead on drafting press lines, press releases and briefing materials that deliver the Embassy’s messages clearly, quickly and effectively to key audiences, proactively identifying and managing risks as well as creating opportunities for positive engagement.
  • Manage the Public Diplomacy budget and identify creative ways to promote the UK’s soft power offer, working alongside the British Council.
  • Identify opportunities to organise and implement events and networking opportunities, including with the sizable UK alumni community, to promote UK interests.
  • In 2024, maximise the opportunities and manage the risks from UK engagement in COP29.

  • Fluent written and spoken English and Azerbaijani (minimum level required C1 under the CEFR or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in public diplomacy, communications, social media, campaigns, and events planning.
  • Proven technical skills in creating content and managing accounts on social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram. Demonstrating understanding when best to use them is highly desired.
  • A solid understanding of Azerbaijani media organisations and journalists. An existing network of contacts is highly desired.
  • Experience monitoring and evaluating media coverage on political developments and producing reports in English.

  • Good understanding of Russian (B1/B2 level)
  • Experience of working with/for a government or media organisation
  • An interest in and good understanding of domestic and international political, economic and social issues – especially social inclusion, peace-building, climate change and trade
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Excellent project management

This is a full-time, permanent contract, 5 working days, 40 hours net per week. 

The salary is 2,310.04 USD paid in AZN per month and shall be paid in AZN monthly.

Flexible working is championed at post, including working from home and flexi-hours, however, the job-holder will need to work to operational needs.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Azerbaijan is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service of the FCDO according to local labour legislation.
