Main purpose of job:
The main purpose of the role is to ensure delivery of professional and high-quality front-line services in line with FCDO guidance.
The Pro-Consul, will act as the first point of contact for consular customers, often working independently, reporting to the Vice Consul. They will also be required to work with senior management and Press and Communications teams at post and in the region, particularly during the Vice Consul’s absence.
The successful candidate will need to deliver professional and efficient consular services to British Nationals and other qualifying persons in Mexico.
The successful Pro Consul will play a key role in front-line, excellent, professional and efficient consular services delivery to all British nationals and other eligible persons, who travel to, transit or reside in, Mexico. This includes, but is not limited to: some notary services required by the Mexican authorities (namely affirmations for marriage), supporting the most vulnerable British nationals who may have been the victim of crime (including those who may have been raped or sexually assaulted); hospitalised; have been arrested or detained in Mexico; or require additional support due to mental health needs; as well as stakeholder management, outreach initiatives and liaising with other relevant FCDO sections across the Americas and worldwide Consular Network, making an effective contribution to the wider team.
Roles and responsibilities:
Assistance work, including crisis:
- Provide consular advice and assistance to British Nationals and other qualifying persons, with a particular emphasis on those deemed vulnerable.
- Perform required Notarial and Documentary Services according to guidance.
- Assist with high profile and/or complex consular cases, maintaining communication with stakeholders externally (local authorities, NGOs, Civil Society and other Embassies) and internally including senior management and London.
- Assist in meeting Consular Business Targets.
- Build and maintain a good base of consular contacts through outreach programmes to assist with Consular cases and Crisis planning.
- Participate in Crisis Exercises and prepare for possible deployment as deputy Consular Manager.
Outreach:
- Help to establish and maintain a network of key contacts, such as government agencies, NGOs, other Embassies, etc.
Communication and administration:
- Assist with Consular internal and external communications at post.
- In the Vice Consul’s absence represent the Embassy at Consular meetings.
- Work with the authorities on consular issues.
- Undertake administrative and other self-management tasks.
- Contribute to the management of the Consular Budget for Post.
Regional responsibilities:
- Contribute to Consular Strategy and Policy input and respond to requests for information from Regional Management and London.
- Participate in regional videoconferences.
- Support other posts in the region by contributing to resilience, both remotely and deploying when required
- Support our planning for the 2026 Football world cup and work and closely with our Embassies in the U.S.A and Canada.

• Managing budgets (consular imprest, benevolent fund, consular fees) from time to time.

- Higher education in international relations, law, social sciences, psychology or other relevant field;
Excellent organisation, prioritisation and communication skills; - Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly;
- Able to prioritise in a fast-paced work environment, working largely unsupervised, delivering to deadlines and agreed targets;
- Have excellent communication and customer service skills, including an ability to support customers in traumatic or difficult circumstances
- Excellent interpersonal skills, relating to relationship building both internally and externally to the British Embassy;
- Computer literate, working with Microsoft Office and able to manage information effectively with available computer systems;
- Language: fluent in written and oral English and Spanish.

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right at time of application.

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list’. If during the reserve period of 12 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
