Main purpose of job:
The jobholder will play a key role in providing modern and efficient consular assistance and services to British people living and visiting Germany. The successful applicant will be working as part of the German consular team alongside colleagues based at the British Consulate-General in Dusseldorf and the British Embassies in Berlin, Berne and Vienna also supporting consular officers at other German speaking posts when needed.
The jobholder will furthermore be expected to contribute to wider Consular objectives and the British Embassy’s priorities and to support its positive working environment and actively participate in Learning and Development efforts. The Consular team in Germany is part of the wider EuroAsia Consular region that includes twenty-nine countries.
The role will involve interaction with members of the public and local and UK authorities It will also require building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders and agencies and deliver targeted prevention campaigns to advise and inform the British public.

Roles and responsibilities:
Administration
- Provide consular services, such as issuing Emergency Travel Documents to British Nationals, notarial and documentary services in Germany. Manage the online appointments booking system as well as perform administrative duties.
Assistance
- Provide professional, empathetic consular assistance across all casework for British Nationals, with a focus on vulnerable customers—such as visiting prisoners, supporting hospital patients, victims of crime, and distressed individuals. Liaise with London-based Consular Special Advisors and local authorities.
- Manage expectations by clarifying available assistance, signposting to relevant resources, and promoting personal responsibility.
- Offer resilience and case-handling support to colleagues in the DACH and EuroAsia regions, including remote cover for other posts and potential deployment at the request of the Consular Regional Operations Manager.
Prevention (lobbying, networking and outreach)
- Develop and implement network/country-specific prevention campaigns per the regional Business Plan, in coordination with the Vice Consul and local stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with the Embassy media team and regional missions to deliver activities aligned with FCDO’s Consular Strategy.
- Organise and attend outreach events with partners and stakeholders (local authorities, law enforcement, NGOs).
- Influence, lobby, and maintain networks with key stakeholders, including colloque partners, MFA, local authorities, NGOs, and associations.
Corporate
- Update consular elements of the Crisis Management Plan and participate in crisis preparedness activities.
- Support mission-wide crisis response in Germany, including liaising with authorities, updating plans with the Regional Crisis Advisor and Consular Regional Operations Manager, and deploying on-site if required.
- Collaborate with colleagues across three posts to ensure coordinated crisis handling.
- Contribute to corporate structures for both responsibilities and personal development.
- Actively engage in Embassy life and committees to promote staff wellbeing.
General
- To undertake other duties that may reasonably be required and which are in accordance with the grading and core competencies of the job.
- Participate in delivering the EuroAsia regional Business Plan as well as having strong interest in the Embassy Business Plan
- Having good awareness of the general Consular Strategy and work according to the principles as set out in the strategy.
- Willingness to travel on assignments and for learning opportunities.

Our Ideal Candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in German and English (written and spoken, minimum of C1 level for CEFR framework*);
- Customer service: previous experience in a customer facing role and ability to response to a wide range of customer needs;

Please be advised that Consular positions at the FCDO entail dealing with crisis and casework in situations that may involve death, detention, rape, assault, post-mortems, prison visits and highly distressed customers. Candidates should therefore have a high level of resilience to trauma.
This is a full time (37,5 hours a week), fixed-term 14 months contract. Salary €52,704.- rising to a maximum of approx. €59,202.- gross per annum after a qualifying period in addition to performance related pay (salary is not negotiable).
Candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation in Germany in order to apply.
Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
