Who are we?
The British Embassy in Berne is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests.
We are currently looking for a motivated Residence Intern to provide hands-on support to the team that manages and runs the official functions of the British Embassy events at the Residence of the Ambassador. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in Hospitality while working in a high-quality environment and having the opportunity to contribute to the coordination of crucial events for at the Residence of the Ambassador in Berne.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Working in Service during various events (breakfasts, lunches, dinner functions and large receptions). Preparing rooms, tables, mise en place and serving our official guests;
- Assisting the Head of Housekeeping & Service with office administration and deputising for her during absences, working independently;
- Supporting the Head Chef in the kitchen to prepare for events or administrational tasks;
- Assisting the Residence team with housekeeping duties and decorations at the Residence;
- Managing the IT & Sound Systems during events;
- Helping with the organisation of the annual King´s Birthday Party Reception with a large number of attendees, mainly by sending out invitations and updating guests list, but supporting with other tasks may be required.

Our ideal candidate shows:
- Proficiency in English at a minimum of C1 level according to CEFR Framework*;
- Previous experience in the Hospitality industry, particularly in a hotel, restaurant or catering;
- Knowledge of the basic principles of formal and informal food service – being familiar with housekeeping functions and food preparation standards;
- Right to live and work in Switzerland;
- Great customer service skills;
- Good communication skills with different level stakeholders;
- Highly collaborative and effective in team-oriented environments;
- Proactive attitude in fast-paced environments;
- Good IT skills, particularly in Microsoft Suite.

Nice to have:
- Current students of Hospitality or a related field, at an undergraduate level, or being a recent graduate;
- Knowledge of French and/or German language
- Willingness to share their knowledge on Hospitality related topics, with a particular focus on beverages, in order to support team development and continuous learning.

This is a full-time and fixed-term, internship contract for 11 months, of 40 hours per week inclusive of four compulsory 45-minute lunch breaks.
Normal working patterns are 08:00 – 16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00 – 13:00 on Fridays. Time off in Lieu is available where staff are required to work beyond their contracted hours and where agreed in advance with line manager.
The job holder will also be required to work on some evenings and weekends by prior arrangement.
Gross monthly stipend/allowance is CHF 2190. The Embassy also enjoys 13 Swiss/UK public holidays per year.
The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearances before a contract is offered.
FCDO is committed to continual learning and development. The Embassy will provide funding in line with L&D requirements and a variety of learning and development is provided throughout the year both directly at post and virtually through the FCDO International Academy. There will be opportunities to attend training, lectures etc. on the job.
