The British Embassy in Brussels is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking for a Residence Trainee to join the team.
Official residences are used to perform a range of different functions in pursuit of One HMG objectives and UK interests. A residence is essential to support these objectives, proving a platform for representational opportunities.
This is an opportunity for a trainee to work in the busy Brussels Diplomatic Residence and develop their hospitality skills.
Main purpose of traineeship:
As a successful candidate, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across all areas of the residence, which hosts overnight guests, receptions, formal meals, and small conferences. Your main objective will be to develop practical skills in a high-quality environment while supporting the team that manages and delivers official functions and events at the British Ambassador’s residence. You will work across four main areas: the kitchen, housekeeping, administration, and the servery.
By the end of your traineeship, you will have gained a solid understanding of the operations and protocols of a diplomatic residence.
This is a 3 month traineeship programme and can have a flexible start date to accommodate academic commitments of the applicant.

Our Ideal candidate shows:
- Full professional proficiency in French (written and spoken, CEFR level C1 or higher) and at least intermediate proficiency in English (minimum CEFR level B1);
- Willingness to work evening hours;
- Demonstrated experience in hospitality services with foundational culinary skills;
- Hospitality skills learned in a formal setting such as a college or culinary school;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Flexibility to work on different tasks and with different teams.

This is a full-time professional immersion traineeship with a duration of 3 months, 40 hours net for 5 working days a week.
The professional immersion indemnity for this position is €1,300.00. Additional benefits including commute refund and luncheon vouchers of €8 per workday are also provided and commute refunds for public transport.
This traineeship provide a professional immersion outside of any educational programme. Therefore, no paperwork with a university or school can be signed.
Trainees have access to 1 day of paid leave and 1 day of unpaid leave per month of Traineeship.
Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their indemnity gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their indemnity net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
Please be advised that the British Diplomatic Missions will not be able to meet the travel costs incurred when travelling to the interview, nor the costs connected with relocation if offered an Traineeship offer.
Professional Immersion Traineeship Requirements:
- Be a minimum of 18 years old;
- Proof of valid medical coverage for the period of the Traineeship (European/Global Health Insurance Card).
Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.
The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.
Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
