| Main purpose of job: The Defence Engagement Officer is a key member of the British Embassy Seoul’s Defence Section, working closely with the Defence Attaché and Deputy Defence Attaché to deliver the UK’s Defence Engagement programme in South Korea. This role supports the UK Ministry of Defence’s strategic objectives by coordinating high-level bilateral defence activities, including senior military visits, joint exercises, training programmes, and policy dialogues. The jobholder will liaise regularly with the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of National Defence, military services, international organisations, and academic institutions, while also collaborating across Embassy teams—particularly with the Defence & Security Exports—to support wider UK Government objectives. The role includes responsibility for managing the Defence Engagement budget and associated systems, contributing to policy development through regional analysis, and supporting the Embassy’s corporate and crisis response efforts. Working Patterns:
Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). However, occasional evening and weekend working may be required, for which time off in lieu is given. The British Embassy Seoul encourages flexible working and various flexible working arrangements are possible with line manager agreement, including working from home.
