Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Seoul is a large diplomatic mission of approximately 100 staff delivering a dynamic and rapidly expanding programme of activity in support of the UK’s objectives. This is an exciting opportunity to be a core part of our Digital team and work in a historic site in the heart of the city.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the Digital Team covering Digital Technology Policy and Digital Trade in support of Embassy objectives under the Country Business plan. The officer will work closely with teams across the Embassy, and with teams based in the UK. You will liaise closely with the Korean Government, the private sector and academia.
The ideal candidate will be flexible, able to balance a number of competing priorities, and have experience working on digital technology issues, e.g. AI and future telecoms. The British Embassy is an exciting and rewarding place to work, and you will directly contribute to the deepening of the relationship between the UK and Korea.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
1. Digital Policy
- Support the implementation of the UK-ROK Digital Partnership and UK-ROK Semiconductor Cooperation Framework signed in Nov 2023, including leading work in select themes, and play a key role in the preparations for the next AI Safety Summit.
- Develop deep understanding of Korea’s approach to digital technology policy and governance; spot opportunities for further UK-Korea collaboration in digital technologies; share your knowledge with UK Government Departments via regular reporting and contributions to set tasks (commissions).
- Coordinate visit programmes for Ministerial and Senior Officials.
- Build relationships with key stakeholder networks across Korean government ministries, government agencies, the National Assembly, academia, think tanks and the private sector.
- Coordinate and support multiple joint collaborative projects UK and ROK.
2. Corporate
- Play an active role in the wider corporate activity of the Embassy, including crisis preparedness.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
Line-manage one AO (Administrative Officer), ensure that this individual is able to achieve their objectives and are actively building skills to help grow in their career.
Essential on Arrival:
- Strong communication skills, including fluency in both Korean and English
- Ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders
- Self-starter who takes initiative to start and drive forward work
- Flexibility and ability to balance competing work priorities
- 3 years work experience
- Experience managing others
Desirable:
- Experience working with government (Korean, UK or other)
- Experience working in tech and/or on digital/technology policy issues
- Experience working on projects, events and visits
