Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy’s Economics and International Development team, which sits within the Economic Diplomacy Section, is seeking a talented policy officer. The team has an important role to play delivering the UK government’s international growth mission. In this exciting position, you will be pivotal to strengthening economic ties and implementing development cooperation between the UK and South Korea.
The state visit of President Yoon Suk-Yeol to the UK in November 2023 and the signing of the Downing Street Accord redefined the relationship between UK and Korea, upgrading our bilateral relationship to Global Strategic Partners. Part of the ambition for implementing the Downing Street Accord sits in the economics team, via both the Strategic Development Partnership between FCDO, Korean MOFA and MOEF; and the commitment to an annual Economic and Financial Dialogue between HM Treasury and Korean MOEF. The role is integral to delivering this ambition, working closely with UK and Korean counterparts to provide expert local knowledge and effective delivery.
You will work directly to the head of the team, who will provide direction in your role; but you will also work closely together on shaping your portfolio based on your interests and skills, as well as being agile to the changing government priorities, both in the UK and Korea, and global developments. Critical to this role and team, is being the source of understanding for UK government decision-makers, providing a perspective that is contextual and evidence-based.

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). However, occasional evening and weekend working may be required, for which time off in lieu is given. The British Embassy Seoul encourages flexible working and various flexible working arrangements are possible with line manager agreement, including working from home.
This role is for 6 months with possibility of extension.
