Main purpose of job:
The Security Shift Supervisor will work on a roster leading a team of Security Assistants in order to provide a quality security service at the British High Commission. He will report directly to the Post Security Manager and will serve as a key member of the High Commission Guard Force.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Maintaining a smart appearance at all times. BHC uniform is to be worn at all times when on duty, to include BHC ID passes.
- Maintaining access control to the High Commission (main and EU gates), Westminster House, Trenchard House and Defence Advisers compounds / properties in line with BHC Post Security Regulations and security standing orders.
- Maintaining security patrols during day and/or night shifts. Including clocking of rounds and ensuring patrol routes are clear of obstructions.
- Assist in facilitating the security changeovers at the Defence Advisers property.
- Ensuring the protection of the High Commission buildings including residences as detailed above.
- Protection of property within the compounds. This includes the prevention of FCDO property being illegally removed from the BHC.
- Reacting appropriately and timely in the event of the bomb, incident or fire alarms being activated.
- Provide fire watch as part of routine patrols.
- Supervising contractors out of hours.
- Reporting incidents inside and outside of the compound.
- Ensuring BHC, Westminster, Trenchard and Defence Advisers house CCTV cameras are not obstructed and operational.
- Ensuring security lighting is functioning as required.
- Maintaining a detailed security log at all guardrooms.
- In the absence of the receptionist, working at the reception and telephone switchboard as required.
- Operating and providing support on VHF radios.
- Liaising with visitors and staff daily.
- Provide additional assistance / resilience where needed in a crisis.
- Reporting faulty security equipment.
- Ensuring all mail received at the High Commission is subject to screening using the mail scanner (except for Diplomatic bags).
- Raising and lowering the flag at designated times.
- Ensuring respective areas are clean and tidy before leaving shift.
- Maintaining security equipment (VHF radio, charger and spare battery, torch etc) and reporting any faults.
- Supervise their team to ensure discipline is well maintained.
- Be an effective line manager to respective SAs.
- Brief security personnel on current security situation and key tasks before starting duty.
- Prepare monthly duty roster, overtime sheets and co-ordinate leave requests.
- Prepare additional SA roster should there be a need to work events and official engagements at the BHC.
- Record sickness or absences in the occurrence book and report to the PSM.
- Plan and train team members on emergency procedures as defined in Post Security Regulations.
- Complete mandatory monthly security training to the required standard in according to the ROSMs training plan and record appropriately
- Recognise SAs limitations and highlight / specify the need for extra training.
- Continuously evaluate the SAs to ensure all aspects of the work are understood and properly conducted.
- Check SAs have completed and updated monthly special task records.
- Review and update duty patrol roaster for touch points on a weekly basis on every Friday.
- Ensure SAs objects are discussed, Mid-term and End of Year feedback is completed on time.
- Ensure all team members are familiar with usage of all the security devices / equipment.
- Report any issues or shortfall of staffing levels to the PSM.
- Assist PSO, ROSM and PSM as and when required to meet crisis needs including emergency transport.
- Provide cover for the PSM in her/his absence if the situation dictates.
- Liaise with Diplomatic and area Police and other security focal points to ensure information gathering is sufficient in the absence of the PSM
- Recording absences and lateness at the commencement of the shift
Language requirements:
Language: English and Sinhala or Tamil
Level of language required: Spoken and Written – Fluent

Essential on arrival:
- Education/Qualification criteria for this position – Secondary Level of Education (GCE A/L).
- 5 Year working experience in security field including Line management responsibilities/Team Management.
- Should be proactive in performing the duties and in helping others.
- Excellent communication skills in English and Sinhalese or Tamil.
- Be an active team players with proven ability to work using own initiative.
- Should have enthusiastic attitude and willingness to deliver a professional customer service.
- Be friendly and helpful and able to remain calm and courteous in demanding situations.
- Valid driving Licence (light vehicles) and good driving skill.

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
For other than BHC candidates, starting salary will be LKR 76,345 + EPF 12% + ETF 3% per month. The current equivalent USD salary paid (at fixed corporate exchange rate from March 2022) is USD 377.00 per month. Other benefits include 13 month’s salary (pro-rated) and medical insurance coverage.
‘Please note that the current salaries are being dollarized and processed in USD (pegged to a fixed corporate exchange rate from March 2022) to provide cushion against the current external market conditions. This is a temporary measure and is subject to review at regular intervals. The payroll will revert to local currency processing once the external market conditions are normalised.
