Main purpose of job:
We are looking for a dynamic, high-calibre colleague who will contribute towards strengthening the UK-India Foreign Direct Investment relationship for North India region specifically across Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh. The role will focus on these states and the Union Territory, ensuring targeted engagement and maximum impact for the region.
Indian companies currently invest more in the UK than the rest of Western Europe combined. We need a team player who will support in retaining this top slot and play their part in the development of our investment strategy in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh.
You will be the face of the British Government for Inward Investment originating from the region into the UK, maintaining key relationships with Indian business houses. As part of the North India Investment team, you will work closely with colleagues at the Deputy High Commission in Chandigarh to ensure alignment on priorities, share insights and coordinate engagement.
The role focusses on business development and promoting the UK offer as the preferred overseas destination of choice to local industry while increasing Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) visibility across the region.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:
You will be part of the UK Department for Business & Trade’s North India Investment team, leading inward investment initiatives into the UK, positioning it as the preferred destination for Indian companies in the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh. This is a high-impact role requiring strategic engagement, relationship management and delivery of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) wins aligned with the UK’s industrial priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
Promote the UK as a Preferred Investment Destination: Drive awareness and position the UK as the leading inward investment destination for Indian companies in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh.
Strategic Relationship Management: Manage key SRM accounts, including top industrialists, high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) and unicorns, ensuring strong engagement and long-term partnerships.
Pipeline Development and Delivery: Build a robust pipeline of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) projects from the region and deliver high-value investment wins across DBT’s priority sectors of Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, Energy aligned with the UK’s Industrial Strategy.
Collaboration and Event Management: Lead the North India Investment team’s engagement across the region, ensuring close collaboration with the Deputy High Commissioner and Chandigarh team to deliver high-impact, business-focused outcomes. Keep DHC Chandigarh sighted on business engagement and coordinate activities requiring senior Chandigarh representation. Support visits by UK ministers and senior UKinIndia colleagues through investor roundtables, regional outreach, and other external engagements. Build strong partnerships with leading trade bodies such as TiE, NASSCOM, and CII to deliver events that promote inward investment and strengthen UK-India business ties.
Operational Excellence: Participate in weekly review meetings with the Investment team and DHC Chandigarh team to track pipeline progress, SRM accounts and internal coordination. Learn and use DBT’s CRM tool (Data Hub) to maintain accurate records of investor interactions. Produce reporting and analysis on state-wise and sector specific opportunities feeding into broader pan-India Investment dashboards.
Regional Engagement: Travel extensively across the region – regardless of whether the base location is Delhi or Chandigarh – to build new strategic relationships with potential investors, strengthen existing partnerships and develop a robust pipeline of high-value projects.
The key elements of your role will be split up as:
Investment Success (50%): Champion the UK as the go-to destination for Indian businesses looking to invest or expand. Help potential and existing investors set up and grow their operations in the UK, delivering against regional and India-wide targets for high-value investments and job creation. Focus on priority areas like Levelling Up, technology, R&D and Net Zero Transition. Work hand-in-hand with UK investment partners – such as London & Partners, Invest Northern Ireland and Local Enterprise Partnerships – to give investors a smooth, end-to-end experience that turns interest into real investment wins. Support analysis and reporting processes that help convert FDI opportunities into successful projects.
Strategic Relationship Management (20%): Build and nurture relationships with high-value investors, prospects, trade bodies, and key partners. Develop a joined-up engagement plan for North India that drives foreign direct investment success. Manage SRM accounts across high-potential cities and clusters including Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Dehradun, Karnal and Shimla.
Events and Visits (20%): Work with the Investment and Chandigarh teams to plan, deliver and report back on outreach events and investor roundtables throughout the year. Lead on Pan-India and regional events that strengthen relationships and grow the investment pipeline. Support ministerial and senior DBT visits, as well as sector delegations. Prepare high-quality briefing packs and oversee on-the-ground logistics to ensure visits run smoothly and deliver impact. Provide surge support to the North India Investment team on strategic initiatives and high-impact programmes, as required.
Corporate Objectives (10%): Play an active role in supporting wider DBT India and DHC Chandigarh priorities, contributing to cross-team initiatives and corporate goals.

- Graduate in any discipline.
- Should have minimum 5 years of total and 3 years of relevant professional experience of working in Trade & Investment or Business Development or FDI attraction.
- Knowledge of the role of government and private sector in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and investment promotion.
- Knowledge and experience of working with industry in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh, supported by existing network of business contacts.
- Knowledge of factors that influence trade, investment, expansion decision-making and value proposition for investors.

For British High Commission candidates, the Country Based Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply.
For other than BHC Candidates, salary will be all-inclusive of INR 125,179 per month plus 12% Provident Fund and 6% Superannuation Fund.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, e.g., some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
