The British Embassy in The Hague is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. It is also part of the UK’s Network in The Netherlands (including offices in Europol, the ICC and OPCW).
The British Embassy is looking for a Serious and Organised Crime (SOC) Policy Officer to join the Policy Team. This is an integral role in a high profile and dynamic team that covers a wide range of issues including politics, economics, science and technology, and migration in addition to security. The role will also work closely with UK operational SOC law enforcement partners. The Netherlands is a high priority for the full range of UK SOC operational agencies, with NCA, HMRC, HOIO, SO15 and Border Force all present on the platform.
Recent years have seen a significant step change in our policy cooperation with The Netherlands on SOC, with a ministerial level annual strategic policy dialogue. The postholder will drive this work forward, working with cross Whitehall stakeholders to deliver the UK-Dutch SOC Dialogue wider partnership activity, at the same time as identifying new opportunities to enhance delivery across SOC-related HMG equities such as counter narcotics, illicit finance, SOC / State Threat nexus activity, and fraud.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver a strategy of engagement on SOC policy with The Netherlands, a key ally in national security cooperation.
- Maintain key relationships with Dutch government and wider contacts to deliver on UK-Dutch SOC priorities and leverage greater co-operation on SOC in priority areas such as countering drug trafficking and illicit finance.
- Lead delivery of the annual senior official-led strategic forum, convening cross-Whitehall stakeholders, liaising with all relevant Dutch counterparts, arranging funding and logistics, and providing thought leadership on topics of focus and respective priority threat areas to be covered.
- Coordinate the ‘Joint Serious Organised Crime’ (JSOC) group of SOC partners that are based at BE The Hague, including acting as secretariat for the SOC Country Delivery Plan for the Netherlands and Europol.
- Spot gaps and opportunities, and where appropriate commission research and analysis on SOC threats, and identify where policy engagement and / programmes are needed to deliver further change on SOC.
- When required, support colleges delivering counter terrorism policy engagement with Dutch counterparts.

The base salary for this position is € 4,481.55 gross per month, based on a working week of 36 hours. In addition, an 8% holiday allowance is payable each year. The successful candidate will initially be offered a 12 month employment contract with the possibility of renewal at Executive Officer (EO) grade.
