Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting and demanding role for an exceptional individual who will play a key role in delivery of the Department for Business & Trade’s (DBT) International Markets (IM) service which supports UK small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) by ensuring they have the knowledge and tools to export to China. 

Working closely with colleagues across DBT, your role will be to support day-to-day operations in IM by handling the pipeline of companies that use the our service, ensuring agreed timeframes for actions are consistent met; updating our list of third-party service providers; and helping ensure the IM team is at the core of DBT’s export support in China through producing reporting and meeting with colleagues across DBT to find areas for collaboration.

You will report to the Head of the International Markets team in China, while working closely with Export Support Service colleagues in the UK and counterparts across our global network.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The IM Support Officer role requires a hard-working and proactive individual who is willing to take on a diverse set of functions and who can adapt to new challenges. The role will be the first point of contact for the majority of SMEs in IM and it is therefore crucial that the jobholder is customer focused and committed to representing the team and DBT positively with UK businesses. 

The role will be responsible for administering the IM enquiries inbox, responding to enquiries as the first point of contact and directing them to the next step of the process; the maintenance of market collateral to be provided to UK exporters; and helping to build a diverse network of partners who the service can work with. 

In addition, the job holder will be expected to flexibly work with other teams in DBT to contribute to the organisation’s objectives. 

To be successful in this role, the job holder will need to collaborate with a multitude of individuals across the network and beyond. Excellent communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to work autonomously. 

Specific responsibilities will include: 
 
IM Operations (c50%) 

  • Support continuous improvement of the service by actively suggesting and implementing process changes.
  • Support to developing our directory of service providers to ensure a diverse choice for our clients, for example by recruiting new members.
  • Support the production and maintenance of high-quality market guides.
  • Other ad-hoc support to the IM team.

Business Development (c40%)

  • Support the promotion of the IM service to a range of stakeholders, including UK businesses, sector colleagues and DBT’s network of International Trade Advisers, to encourage use of the service and gain a wider pool of export-ready clients. This could be through one-to-one conversations or, for example, participation in webinars.

Corporate Contribution (c10%) 

  • Promote and contribute to the China business plan and network values, actively and constructively participating in Post activities.
  • Commit to continual learning of both self and team, making full use of on-the-job opportunities to deepen and develop own expertise and knowledge and understanding of the UK/China business environment, as well as formal training for skills and personal competences most relevant to the job.

  • Excellent English: the role will work almost entirely in English and involves producing written information to a high standard.
  • Strong attentional to detail and able to produce reporting with minimal editing required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across teams and stakeholders based in different locations and time zones.
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to balance a variety of tasks.
  • Proficiency with the MS Office suite, particularly in processing data using Excel.

Working Patterns:
