The British Embassy (BE) Tunis invites applications for the position of Economic Officer, job grade Higher Executive Officer (HEO) on a fixed term contract for one (1) year (renewable).
The British Embassy carries out a wide range of activities in line with UK government priorities. The Political & Press Affairs Section is at the heart of BE Tunis. We keep colleagues across the Embassy and in the UK government up to date on the latest political and economic developments, providing analysis and advice on current issues and what they mean for the UK. We manage press enquiries, communication and oversee our bilateral engagement in annual Ministerial-level talks.
The Economic Officer will sit in the Political & Press Affairs Section to strengthen economic analysis and reporting, by:
The jobholder will also work closely with BE Tunis Programmes Team and UK Department for Business and Trade (DBT).
Duties and responsibilities:
Provide high quality economic analysis and reporting (50%)
Political economy and social analysis (15%)
Support economic analysis in teams across BE Tunis (15%)
Build and maintain network of external stakeholders (10%)
Corporate (10%)
The above list is not exhaustive, and the jobholder will be required to be flexible as specific responsibilities could change in the future and this would be at the discretion of the line manager. The job description may be reviewed to meet changes in business needs. The jobholder may also take on other ad hoc tasks as required, including participating in the Embassy’s emergency planning and any other response to a crisis.

Working hours and remuneration:
The British Embassy in Tunis offers an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role. Initial salary will be TND 6,509 per month while on probation. Salary after probation is TND 8,075. However, staff who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary (i.e., UKBS spouse/ partner) may have their salaries reduced by the equivalent local income tax amount.
This position is for a full-time employment on a fixed term basis for one (1) year (renewable). The successful candidate will be subject to a three-month probationary period that can be further extended up to six months. The appointment is also subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances.
Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week (inclusive of breaks). Standard working hours are from 08:00-16:30 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00-13:00 on Fridays.
Unless authorised otherwise, we expect staff to be physically present in the Embassy five days per week. A flexible working pattern may be possible depending on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies. The jobholder will also be required to be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evening/ weekend).
The FCDO and BE Tunis takes learning and development (L&D) seriously. In Tunis, we have an active L&D Committee which promotes different ways of learning, as well as offering International Academy (IA) sessions and bringing in formal courses. In this role in particular, you will apply and deepen your economic technical competences, develop diplomatic skills, enhance your leadership, policy, and problem-solving skills, and strengthen your programme delivery.
You will be expected to continue to develop as an economist. You will have opportunities to complete e-learning and masterclasses in economic diplomacy, attracting foreign investment, trade & society, goods, services, and regulatory diplomacy. You may apply to courses such as the FCDO Trade Practitioner Level Programme, and the Economics for Foreign Policy Course in partnership with Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government. L&D opportunities will also include the ability to apply for leadership development programmes or other areas of interest.
