Main purpose of job:
The UK Department for Business and Trade aim to strengthen the bilateral trade relationship between the UK and Nepal. Based at the British Embassy Kathmandu, DBT Nepal will work to increase UK exports to Nepal; support British investments in the country; and encourage greater inward investment from Nepal to the UK.
The role will support the Head of DBT Nepal in developing crucial relationships and driving delivery against ambitious trade and investment targets. You will work with the head of team across an established Embassy network, which includes colleagues working on prosperity and international development, supporting a multi-sector approach (initial priority sectors are energy and infrastructure, skills and education and consumer retail/ food and drinks).
The successful candidate will be supporting the Head of DBT on annual business planning, business engagement visiting delegations and other high-level activity as it emerges. The successful candidate will be developing the tourism and retail sectors and support other priority sectors.
The successful candidate will work closely with DBT colleagues in the region to ensure strong information-sharing and maximising commercial opportunities across the South Asian region.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
- Leading on the tourism and retail sectors developing a deep understanding of the UK and Nepal market including key stakeholders, market opportunities, market access issues and competition.
- Building a pipeline of commercial opportunities and match UK exporters with local clients seeking to capitalise on emerging requirements.
- Engaging the respective sector network, including briefing British and Nepalese businesses, responding to enquiries, including market access, local engagement and doing business in Nepal.
- Initiate engagement with Nepalese clients to identify market trends and emerging opportunities.
- Leading sector specific events, including inward and outward trade missions and visits.
- Build and maintain operational relationships within the Embassy and across the wider region.
- Maintaining a log contact and interactions with customers on our global ‘Data Hub’ database.
- Produce high-quality reports and briefings for senior officials and Ministers.
Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed):
Training and development opportunities will be made available to the candidate. The candidate will occasionally need to travel within the region and to the UK for relevant events and training courses.
• University qualification: minimum bachelor’s degree
• You will need to be a self-starter who can hit the ground running and quickly adapt to the role.
• Good analytical, presentation and interpersonal skills.
• The ability to initiate and maintain a wide range of working relationships, both internally and externally.
• Good knowledge and experience in policy advocacy, and investment and trade/export promotion.
• Strong organisational and management skills.
• The ability to work quickly, reliably, and proactively with attention to detail and limited supervision.
• Excellent written and oral English is essential with an eye for detail.
• Experience of work in an international business environment and working with Government and private sector
• Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant commercial/business development experience.
• IT competent. Highly competent in standard MS Office tools, such as Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel and skilled at using digital and social media to gather information efficiently.
• Basic understanding of budget management.
Language requirements:
Language: Nepalese and English
Level of language required: Native Nepalese and excellent written and spoken English is essential.
• Knowledge of retail and tourism sectors.
• Experience of working in/with UK companies.
• Knowledge of Nepal business environment and of UK business related policies.

Basic Salary will be NPR 151,530 per month plus 10% provident fund Contribution.
