The British Embassy in Paris is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade & Investment Adviser to join its Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team.

The job holder will provide support to the Technology, Innovation and Life sciences team to design and deliver a programme of activity that promotes a thriving UK-France commercial relationship; by helping to make the UK a brand of choice in France through promoting British exports and developing the UK’s tech sector by attracting French inward investment. There will also be opportunities to lead on some projects in collaboration with colleagues across the network.

The job holder will foster excellent relationships in their sector, with a renewed focus on the UK’s priorities in technology and life sciences.

This is a rewarding role, which offers an overview of the whole team’s work, insights into the functioning of an Embassy and UK Government, and access to opportunities for further professional development.

Roles and responsibilities:

With the support of senior trade and investment leads in your team, you will help:

  • Identifying high potential UK and French companies in the technology and life sciences sectors with an interest in exporting or investing across the Channel.

  • Supporting British companies to export by providing useful business leads, introductions and advice on entering the French market.

  • Supporting high value French companies with their inward investment projects in the UK by working collaboratively with colleagues in UK-based DBT teams, in UK regional investment agencies and other local partners.

  • Monitoring and conducting analysis of the opportunities in the technology and life sciences sectors, understanding relevant French policies and showcasing UK expertise and capabilities in these areas.

  • Providing support to strategic activities in the technology and life sciences sectors including VivaTech, London Tech Week and major life sciences and pharmaceutical events and trade shows.

  • Actively contributing to the DBT France and British Embassy in Paris teams to make this an even better place to work.

The work will be high paced, varied and demanding. The successful candidate will need to be flexible, able to juggle priorities and work to tight deadlines.

  • Fluency at C1 level in English and French (according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages*), verbal and written, with excellent communications skills;

  • A self-starter with the positivity and ability to work both independently and as part of a team;

  • Ability to deliver high quality work at pace;

  • Ability to manage time effectively and balance competing demands/priorities;

  • Capacity to operate flexibly as new requirements emerge and take initiative where possible;

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office or other equivalent professional IT/work suites;

  • Strong analytical and research skills including the ability to identify trends.

  • Demonstrated business development, trade and investment promotion experience;  

  • Experience of working in a role requiring excellent customer service skills;

  • Experience of working in a political or business context;

  • Experience of working in an international environment.

This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 12 months with the possibility of becoming permanent, for 35 working hours per week. The British Embassy still currently operates a flexible working from home pattern of 2-3 days in the office and 2 days at home. This could change and the successful candidate would need to fit with the guidance in this external-facing role.  

This is an interesting and varied job in an open, modern management culture; We offer an excellent working environment in a central location.

The successful applicant will have access to a budget for learning and career development. L&D opportunities are continuous. The DBT France team prioritises individual and team L&D. Opportunities include job shadowing in DBT HQ in London or across other DBT Europe offices.

All appointments are subject to professional background checks, and a satisfactory security clearance. The successful applicant will be required to provide a copy of his/her passport or national identity card for all nationalities held, an up-to-date criminal record (casier judiciaire) for recent countries of residence (which can be obtained online at https://www.cjn.justice.gouv.fr/cjn/b3/eje20 ), two written proofs of address (utility invoices and/or bank statements) and two references.
