Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) Africa network. DBT brings together sector, policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment in markets across the world to help businesses succeed. We have over 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries.

You will join DBT Africa, a dynamic workforce of around 120 staff in 20 countries, led by John Humphrey, HM Trade Commissioner, who is based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Africa is exciting and energising, with many of the fastest changing and growing markets on earth. The UK has a depth of historical relationships on the continent.

You will work in British Embassy Luanda within the Department of Business and Trade (DBT) team.  We are a core part of the wider economic-focused Prosperity Team,  comprising DBT and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), all working to alleviate poverty, improve economic development, and enhance investment and trade between the UK and Angola.

As a Trade & Investment Advisor, you will work to identify, generate and support export and investment opportunities for UK businesses to the Angolan market and deliver the targets outlined in DBT’s market plan for Angola.  You will also work on campaigns to promote trade and s, facilitate and support deals in addition to account managing selected UK companies. The British Embassy in Luanda is a dynamic and enjoyable place to work. You will be part of a supportive working environment, led by His Majesty’s Ambassador to Angola, and with access to coaching and development opportunities from the wider DBT Africa Network.

The key role responsibilities are:

  • Leading work in specific sectors (e.g. infrastructure and healthcare) to identify and deliver a pipeline of export business opportunities, working closely with DBT and FCDO colleagues and building a network with UK businesses, Angolan buyers and government authorities (regulators, decision-makers and policy experts).
  • Leading targeted commercial campaigns to promote specific market opportunities in certain sectors and facilitate deals and transactions between UK sellers and Angolan buyers.
  • You will account manage a selection of the most significant UK business responding to their needs and supporting their work.
  • Leading and/or supporting outgoing and incoming trade missions, business engagement events and networking events.
  • You will work  efficiently and proactively with our Embassy comms team to market the UK’s capability to key stakeholders in the Angolan public and private sectors.
  • You will work with colleagues in the market access / trade policy teams leads to identify and work to resolve key market access barriers to improve the business environment.

The role will require strong interpersonal and organisational skills, with the ability to influence and build relationships with business and government stakeholders. It will require close teamwork and flexibility, supporting the British Embassy’s wider prosperity strategy and undertaking tasks under our 1HMG ethos. 

  • Degree in business, economics, management, finance or related field
  • Experience in the private sector or government and/or supporting private sector companies/organisations in doing business
  • Current knowledge of Angola’s economy, government and business environment
  • Good communication and relationship building skills
  • Good written skills
  • Fully fluent in Portuguese and English (both written and spoken)

  • Knowledge of the UK economic and business environment and/or UK players in the Angolan market

Learning and development opportunities:

The successful applicant will have access to a range of learning and development opportunities with in-house and e-learning, with the potential for overseas training. From time to time there will be requirements to assist other teams within the department, building overall resilience and broader experience.

Working patterns:

Flexible working could be considered for the successful candidate, although all Heads of Sections routinely work full time from the office given the nature of their leadership roles. The successful candidate will be expected to be office based and to attending meetings and events in person.

This role may require some travel outside of standard working hours as well as corporate entertaining, sometimes in the mornings, evenings and weekends. Flexibility will be required to respond to opportunities to drive the investment agenda for maximum impact.
