The Film and Media Studies Program at Colgate University invites applications for a visiting assistant professor for the 2024-2025 academic year, with possibility of renewal, contingent on institutional need and evaluation of teaching effectiveness. Completion of PhD or MFA is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire. We are especially interested in candidates engaged with immersive media theory and design (including augmented, virtual, and extended reality), particularly the ways in which these technologies can intersect with other subfields including, but not limited to, environmental media and media ecologies, global media industries, political economies of media, media archaeologies (and the transition from film to video to digital to virtual), and/or queer visual cultures. Theorist-practitioners and those with experience in immersive media production are welcome and encouraged to apply. The teaching responsibility is the equivalent of five courses per year, and will include our required Introduction to Film and Media Studies course; relevant existing elective courses such as New Media: History and Theory from Netflix to VR, Global Media, and/or LGBTQ Cinema; and advanced courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise. Ongoing contributions to the program’s longstanding tradition of bringing a diverse group of media makers and scholars to campus will be integral to the position, as will curating screenings/exhibitions and organizing special events.
In June 2024, the Film & Media Studies Program will be moving into a new, state-of-the-art building shared with the Computer Science Department that will house an experimental exhibition and performance space, a media archaeology lab, a digital music studio, a gaming lab, and fabrication labs. More information about the new building, and Colgate’s Initiative for Arts, Creativity, and Innovation can be found here.
