The Opportunity

The Court is participating in the global fight to end impunity, and through the international criminal justice, the Court aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent the crimes from happening again. You can contribute to this cause by joining the ICC.
Organisational Context
Chambers, comprising three judicial divisions (Appeals Division, Trial Division and Pre-Trial Division), is responsible for judicial proceedings for crimes within the jurisdiction of the Court and is the organ within the Court in charge of the development and maintenance of the Case Law Database (CLD) Project.
Chambers is recruiting visiting professionals to support the CLD team. The CLD is an easily searchable database providing free access to the entire case-law of the ICC’s public decisions in English, including separate and dissenting opinions, and to a growing number of translations in French and Spanish. In addition to the full-text search within judicial decisions, the CLD provides substantive analysis by indicating when decisions contain “Legal Findings”, which are selected extracts from the Court’s case law with jurisprudential value that have been indexed with level of importance, keywords and related decisions. These features elevate the CLD’s value far above a mere word-searchable repository of judgments and decisions.
The selected candidate(s) will work within the CLD in Chambers, under the supervision of the CLD Coordinator, contributing to the head-noting process, development, and maintenance of the CLD.
Duties and Responsibilities
As part of the CLD team, the visiting professionals will have the following duties and responsibilities:
• Conduct in-depth legal analysis of the Court’s case law, in order to identify and extract key Legal Findings;
• Identify the Legal Findings’ relative level of jurisprudential importance;
• Identify the Legal Findings’ relevant legal keywords, based on statutory provisions;
• Identify relationships between related judgments, decisions and orders and between Legal Findings;
• Collect, organise, and collate other assorted metadata fields for Legal Findings;
• Participate in meetings and substantive discussions on issues arising in the CLD Project and the development of the Court’s jurisprudence;

• Assist in the development of other language versions of the CLD; and
• Perform other tasks, as requested by the CLD Coordinator.
