Looking for a challenging and fulfilling internship in Conservation? The Rhode Island NWR Complex is hiring two Visitor Services Interns to join a passionate and innovative team. This is a great opportunity for applicants seeking to advance their career in conservation science while protecting imperiled species and ecosystems on five National Wildlife Refuges in Rhode Island.
Position Description: Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)…
- Providing outreach on shorebird conservation work at Sandy Point Island;
- Operating a motor boat;
- Co-leading school groups on field trips;
- Supporting volunteers at the visitor centers;
- Working with partners on summer interpretive programs;
- Trail monitoring & maintenance;
- Supporting biologists and other interns with wildlife/habitat management;
- Learning about the mission of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Requirements: Applicants must…
- be willing to become certified as a motorboat operator and operate a boat to access a near-shore island;
- possess a valid driver’s license;
- be comfortable driving on highways with pick-up trucks;
- have the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions (especially heat and humidity), walk long distances on sandy beaches while carrying a pack up to 40-pounds, and endure biting insects;
- work well with visitors and co- workers of all ages and backgrounds.
Position Dates: Two positions available from ~mid May to August (some flexibility in start and end dates may be available for well qualified candidates).
Salary: $580/week, required to work weekends and some holidays.
Housing: Off-site, shared housing may be available. A personal vehicle will be needed to commute to the refuge office.
