Location Details/Description: Santee National Wildlife Refuge – Summerton, SC

Santee National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in 1941 and consists of 13,000 acres.  The refuge is superimposed on the lands and waters of the 110,600-acre Lake Marion reservoir in Clarendon County. The South Carolina Public Service Authority, a.k.a. Santee Cooper, created Lake Marion as a hydroelectric project on the Santee River.  Santee NWR provides habitat for migratory waterfowl, neotropical songbirds and other birds, and a variety of terrestrial and aquatic wildlife.  Refuge habitats include mixed hardwoods, mixed pine hardwoods, pine plantations, freshwater marsh, croplands, old fields, ponds, impoundments, and open water.

A myriad of wildlife inhabit the diverse landscape of Santee NWR.  During November through February, migrating waterfowl such as ring-necked duck, pintail, teal, and wood ducks, along with geese and swans, are a major attraction. Throughout the year, bald eagles, red-shouldered hawks, woodpeckers, owls, wild turkey and wading birds use the refuge.  The forests are home to white-tail deer, squirrels, bobcat and other woodland creatures. Alligators, turtles, fish, frogs,  insects and other wildlife are found in ponds and marshes.

Position Overview: During this term, the ACE member will contribute to conservation and educational projects such as roving outdoor interpretation, school field trips,  environmental education and interpretive programs.   The member will also staff the refuge visitor center, conducting off and onsite programming and public and community events.  The ACE member must display a positive, professional attitude and have a teamwork approach on the job, while working with refuge staff, volunteers and visitors.  The member will have the opportunity to learn about refuge management, biology, maintenance and facilities.

Visitor Services duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as refuge face to the public; staffing the visitor center front desk, greeting visitors, providing refuge information and brochures, answering phones and questions.
