Voluntary Stewardship Coordinator

The Walla Walla County Conservation District (WWCCD) is seeking an entry-level full-time voluntary stewardship coordinator to join our team and help complete our mission of conserving and enhancing natural resources in the county through voluntary participation and education. 

The District has a talented team of passionate and committed people who are mission-driven and care deeply about serving and improving our community. Our dynamic organization is led by volunteer board members and paid staff members who help landowners implement “on the ground conservation”. The successful candidate will work closely with local landowners, coworkers, and conservation partners to develop and implement conservation plans specific to each landowner’s needs.

Salary: $20-25 per hour DOE

Job Duties:

Work closely with partners, staff, and landowners to implement VSP program elements including reporting, data management, planning and Best Management Practices (BMP) implementation, etc.  Budgeting and creating projects that align with the Annual Plan of Work. Write grants to gain funding for projects that will better our natural resources. Implement projects from start to finish in cooperation with partners, staff, and landowners. Monitor projects and natural resources for compliance. Includes other duties as assigned.

Work Conditions:

Working conditions may include office and outdoor environments. Applicant must be able to physically perform tasks in the field by traversing uneven ground in varied weather conditions and occasionally carrying up to 30 pounds of equipment and/or materials.  Work requires finger dexterity and must be able to use office equipment and computer software. This is a full-time position consisting of 40 hours/week (negotiable). The position will require some work in the evenings or after regularly scheduled work hours.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, or closely related field; OR a technical degree (AS/AA) and 1-year related experience. Qualifying experience may substitute year-for-year for the education requirement
  • Must have great verbal/written communication skills for grant writing, technical reports, and project correspondence with the ability to follow written protocols
  • Must maintain accurate records, be self-motivated, and have the ability to work in a positive manner both independently and collaboratively within diverse teams and landowners
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license and provide a clean driving record at the time of hire.
  • Must be able to pass security and drug screening to work in a federal building
  • Understanding of natural resource priorities as they relate to agriculture viability, water quality, & salmon recovery

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of local agriculture
  • Experience facilitating and/or attending a Public Meeting
  • Knowledge of NRCS conservation planning principles
  • Ability to import, analyze, and develop data sets using ArcGIS
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite and ArcGIS
  • Public speaking skills with the ability to enhance support for programs to a diverse group
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal partners, ordinances, and regulations
  • Experience in budgeting for small- and large-scale projects
