About the Mentoring Role
The WJN Mentoring Program aims to provide an opportunity to build a sense of belonging to the local community for women who have exited custody or are at-risk of entering the criminal law system. This is achieved by linking female volunteer mentors with women who have a history with the criminal justice system. Female Mentors are recruited to provide gender-appropriate social support to women.
A sense of belonging and connectedness can be developed from a range of activities such as:
- Providing pro-social support to women to assist their transition back into the community
- Assist to increase knowledge of services in the local area
- Enhance knowledge of and access to recreational activities such as; sport, arts and leisure in the local area
- Most importantly, the availability and commitment of Mentors on a voluntary basis to develop a sustainable relationship with a Mentee
Training and Support
- Initial 2 days specialised mentoring training provided by the Women’s Justice Network
- Monthly Mentor meetings
- Ongoing training in regard to the policies, procedures, Work Health & Training, Cultural Awareness and practices specific to this role
- Ongoing opportunities externally with other training providers
- Ongoing debriefing and support from the Caseworkers at the Women’s Justice Network

During your time as a Mentor, you will acquire knowledge on issues affecting women involved in the criminal law system, basic knowledge of the welfare/legal system, harm minimisation strategies and trauma-informed care principles.
About the Women’s Justice Network
The Women’s Justice Network (formerly WIPAN) is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation dedicated to improving the status, wellbeing and prospects of women and young women affected by the criminal justice system. WJN addresses the many issues facing criminalised women and young women both systemically through advocacy, and individually through one-to-one mentoring of women. WJN operates on the premise that providing women and young women with gender-responsive social support will lead to a reduction of recidivism rates and a minimisation of the burgeoning prison population.
