Manage the Warmwater Enhancement Program’s data and databases, which includes data from standardized surveys, fall walleye index netting, creel surveys, and fishing contest data!

Lead the fishing contest program, commercial and sport Common Carp fisheries, scientific collection permit process, sport fish state record program, and commercial crayfish permits.

In this dynamic role, you will develop, update, maintain, and document several programmatic databases of biological and fishery monitoring data.

This is an opportunity to organize expert responses, communicate permit conditioning, issue permits, and receive final collection reports to ensure comprehensive compliance with state law.

Duties

Our Warmwater Fish Database Manager & Permit Specialist Biologist,

Manage, organize, and maintain the Warmwater Enhancement Program databases: 

• Database programming, receiving, and entering data from other Warmwater Enhancement Program staff.
• Document database parameters and changes to database structure, implementing redundancy and archives to ensure database stability, summarizing, analyzing, and distributing data.

Manage the Fish Program’s scientific collection permit process: 

• Receive applications for permits, sending them out for review to subject matter experts and processing the permit in a timely manner consistent with policy.

Manage the fishing contest permit program: 

• State law limits the quantity of contests and contestants that may occur on any single body of water each month and limits the quantity of contests an organization may conduct in a calendar year, where conflicts arise, this position facilitates a fair conflict resolution process.

Manage statewide commercial carp fisheries: 

• Receive applications, process permits, organize the associated data and submit data to the commercial fish ticket program.

Manage the sport fish state record program: 

• Receive and process state record applications, ensuring all criteria are consistent with state law.

Manage the commercial crawfish program:  

• Receive and record catch data and submit data to the commercial fish ticket program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • 95% of the work is conducted in an office setting.
  • 5% of the work is varied field work with a minor amount of time on boats, must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
• Schedule:
  • 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week Monday – Friday.
• Travel Requirements:
  • There are some minor requirements to travel throughout the state.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Basic office equipment, raingear, & boots.
• Customer Interactions:
  • Regular interaction with applicants on the phone, through video conferencing, email and occasionally in person.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science AND Three (3) years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research.

OR

• Two (2) years as a Fish & Wildlife Biologist 2.

Please Note:

• A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute one (1) year of the required experience.
• A Ph.D. in the applicable science may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
• Closely related qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.

Competencies:  

• Demonstrated database experience using Microsoft Access, SQL server or other database equivalent.
• Demonstrated knowledge and application of programming languages including SQL, R, Python, Perl etc.

Certifications/Licenses: 

• Valid Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

• Knowledge of Pacific Northwest fishes, species life history, population dynamics, habitats, and fish species identification.
• Knowledge of appropriate scientific methods and tools to conduct analysis.
