Guinea Bissau, one of the least developed countries in the world, was ranked 175th out of 189 countries assessed in the 2020 UNDP Human Development Report which indicates that the majority of the population is affected by multidimensional poverty. The low access to water and sanitation services are both the result of poverty and an important contributing factor to communities experiencing high burdens of water-borne diseases, and malnutrition, both of which are major causes of death in under five children. Inadequate access to water and sanitation infrastructure is also a major barrier to girls’ access to basic education.
