About our opportunity

Working alongside professionals in this field, you will gain some great knowledge in the area of your studies as you assist the team in community engagement and education to inform the community of Council’s waste and recycling services and implement behavioural interventions to achieve Council’s Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy waste reduction, waste diversion from landfill and recycling rate targets.

The duties of our University Student will include assisting with the implementation of initiatives from Council’s Waste Education and Community Engagement Plan by communicating with Council staff and the Moreton Bay community on waste education and recycling, attending community events and undertaking stallholder duties. You will be preparing and issuing correspondence to Moreton Bay residents and responding to customer enquiries regarding Waste matters. 

This position will also have you improving and modifying the Waste Services webpage content, identifying methods to reach target audiences and engaging with corporate communications on media and social media posts related to waste management and behavioural interventions

Your enthusiasm and drive will be paired with exceptional customer service skills as we strive to provide a great experience for all of our stakeholders we interact with.

You will be currently enrolled in relevant university studies and be available to work a minimum of 3 days per week (Monday to Friday) with occasional opportunities to work at community events (approximately few weekends each year).

Relevant studies will ideally have a Behavioural Economics focus, but if you have a second major or minor of sustainability, community engagement, communications and behaviour change would be beneficial too, majors in business, accounting and law will also be considered. Ideally, your degree will have a focus on some or all of these topics:

  • Behavioural Economics/Behaviour Change and Community Engagement around sustainable of resources, recycling opportunities and waste services
  • Communications/community engagement in environment, sustainability and behaviour change
  • Marketing
  • Education
  • Environmental sustainability – programs/education/resource use/circular economy and/or diversion of resource from landfill.

The team are currently based at Petrie and will be relocating to the brand new, purpose built Narangba Depot in the coming months. There is parking available at both sites.
