Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, with duty station Juba. Juba is classified in the “E” category and as a non-family duty station. The incumbent will directly report to UNMISS Engineering’s Juba Field Office Unit.
Responsibilities
Under general supervision by the Chief Engineer, the WATSAN Technician FS4 will be responsible for the following duties: • Undertake tasks related to water supply and sewerage works installations in UNMISS; • Maintain and operate conventional water treatment systems; • Install and maintain WWTP system; carry out installation of new water supply and sewerage works and maintain existing systems; • Ensure that the water supply and sewerage work installations meet the safety standards in accordance with international codes and regulations; • Assist in carrying out scheduled periodic and emergency maintenance services on all installations and equipment; • Periodically inspect ongoing projects and report to the Field Engineer on progress, timelines and any setbacks or alterations that may occur; • Install, service, maintain, and repair, in compliance with recognized standards and regulations pertaining to safety and installation codes, buildings, camps/sanitary infrastructures, or other structures including sanitation facilities such as: ablution units, bathrooms and toilets, laundries and kitchen water and wastewater systems; • Diagnose technical faults and carry out remedy for malfunctioning or defective sanitary installations; • Perform diagnostics and preventive maintenance of installations of plumbing and pipe work. • Perform technical or other assessments of installations and prepare technical or other reports; • Apply and ensure adherence to safety programmes related to the safe operation of the building and maintenance trade; • Conduct in-house training to tradesmen and artisans on the emerging technical skills in the new related construction methods, installation of specialized equipment, fault finding and remedy; • Review and recommend for approval work orders and assign day to day repair and maintenance tasks to tradesmen and technicians being supervised; • Inspect and report on construction project work and maintenance work carried out either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision and ensure proper utilization of available resources; • Read and interpret specifications and technical drawings, schedules, manuals for related construction projects, installations and upgrade and repair of infrastructure. • Resolve problems; inspect quality of work and work performance. Administration • Maintain records relating to inventories, work orders and general correspondence; • Prepare bills of quantities and costing for WATSAN infrastructure projects; • Assist in carrying out technical assessments of existing WATSAN infrastructure; • Assist in the preparation of cost estimates for infrastructure projects and maintenance programmes; • Assist in technically evaluating bids and proposals for related WATSAN projects; • Provide inputs periodically for assessment of performance levels of assigned local staff and UNVs; • Alert the Supervisor of Unit / Section of unusual occurrence and/or damage that have taken place or are likely to occur.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
Technical or vocational certificate in Water Resources, Water sample analysis, installation, operation, and maintenance of the water equipment is required.
Work Experience
A minimum of six (06) years of relevant experience in the field of Water and Sanitation and/or plumbing works is required. Experience in international operations in a post conflict environment is desirable.
Languages
French and English are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
Assessment
