Water Program Coordinator

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This is a full-time position within the Natural Resources Department of the Buena Vista Rancheria, under the general direction of the COO. The Water Program Coordinator works closely with the COO and Natural Resource Department staff to coordinate and implement water, natural resource, and environmental media programs on Tribal lands. Major responsibilities include managing water quality monitoring programs, helping to identify sources of local water pollution, and implementing solutions to protect and enhance water quality.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate and implement various natural resource, environmental media, and water-related management and monitoring plans on Tribal Lands
• Coordinate and implement water quality monitoring activities for water quality programs:
  • Plan sampling events and track program status
  • Obtain supplies/materials and calibrate equipment
  • Coordinate and mobilize field staff
  • Collect samples, and process or transport samples
  • Manage, organize, and analyze field and laboratory data
  • Generate data figures, statistics, and maps
• Coordinate the annual outreach events including recruiting and training volunteers, and presenting results
• Coordinate watershed and water quality education/outreach activities and events
• Assist with project implementation/construction as needed (ex. green infrastructure) to reduce pollution and restore a healthy environment
• Administrative duties such as tracking budgets, invoicing, writing reports, and drafting grants and proposals as needed
• Plan, develop, coordinate, and implement, monitoring of the Tribal water programs
• Actively seek funding for the continued growth of the Tribal water program
• Assist in the development, implementation, and review of various Environmental Management Plans including, but not limited to, the Integrated Resource Management Plan (IRMP), Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP), Groundwater Plans, Wetland Program Plan (WPP) and Tribal Non-point Source Assessment and Management Plan
• Undertake any other duties assigned or required for any other functions of the Natural Resources Department
• Coordinate with regional environmental organizations, local government agencies, and tribal partners for the greater enhancement of ancestral lands and waters

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience working with Tribal governments and Native communities
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
• Willingness and ability to perform field duties such as water quality sampling, Best Management Practices installation and inspection
• Ability to work positively with the Tribal community and co-workers in a conscientious and professional manner
• Experience with GIS and GPS mapping
• Ability to operate standard computer software applications required of the position
• Knowledge of EPA environmental programs (all media)
• Knowledge of wetland and surface water management and monitoring
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements
• Ability to work independently and effectively handle multiple assignments

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

A bachelor’s degree in natural studies, environmental science, geology, natural resources, chemistry, or a related biological sciences is desired. A minimum of 2 years combined of education and/or experience performing water and natural resource management related duties.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

The possession of a State of California Class “C” Valid Driver license is required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• This position primarily requires working in an office and field environment in both Sacramento and Buena Vista, California
• Physically able to work in the field (climbing in and out of streams, stooping, walking on uneven ground, lifting (may exceed 50 ), carrying supplies and equipment etc.) during all weather conditions
• Travel will be required for training, meetings, conferences and tribal community events. There is access to a Tribal work vehicle for some travel.
