The objective of the position is to support WHO Nepal’s environmental health Programme in planning and implementation of activities related with water quality monitoring and surveillance, climate change and health, coordinating with relevant government counterparts, water utility operators and others, supporting monitoring, and preparing the progress reports accordingly.
Summary of Assigned Duties:
Under the overall guidance of WHO Representative to Nepal, Public Health Administrator (PHA) and direct supervision of the National Professional Officer (NPO)/Environmental Health, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:
  • Provide technical support to plan, develop, implement, and follow up various activities on water quality, climate change and environment related health issues.
  • Support Department of Water Supply and Sewerage Management (DWSSM) on collection of water quality data, its periodic review and technical reporting with recommendation for improvement.
  • Review the previous water quality related data and assist government agencies and other water utility operators to conduct water quality monitoring as per the national standards guidelines and data management through WQ NWASH
  • Support training program of DWSSM especially for water quality testing methodology and data management through NWASH- WQ.
  • Support newly stablished laboratories throughout the country at national and sub-national level. 
  • Support the proper use of mobile laboratory vans located at provincial level and run the mobile van of DWSSM to test water quality at field level during emergency and normal situation as well.
  • Plan random sample collection and test as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with NWASH team, maintain test records. 
  • Orient the local level staff to operate and maintain the available microbiological test kit.
  • Support DWSSM to operate/enhancement central water quality lab and labs at provincial levels.
  • Coordinate with EDCD/DOHS for water quality surveillance activities.
  • Support to organize capacity building activities on water quality monitoring, surveillance, use of different equipment, operation of water quality labs, at national and sub-national levels.
  • Provide on-site support on use of bleaching powder for disinfection, water quality test including direct assessment as sanitary inspection using standard formats
  • Provide contribution to report writings including the development of presentations, and other communication activities, as well as liaise with local stakeholders.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisors. This includes duty travel or duty-station reassignment on short notice as per the program requirements.
Qualification:
Education:
Essential:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Micro-biology, Chemistry, Public Health, Civil Engineering or any closely related field.
Experience:
Essential:
  • At least 3 years’ professional experience related to water quality, including practical experience on water quality surveillance or monitoring activities including water quality testing.
Functional Knowledge and Skills:
  • Self-motivated with ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to work as a team member in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Ability to travel within the country and to perform practical hands-on field work.
  • Very good analytical skills including ability to collect and analyze technical data and information and to draw and present conclusions in written and spoken form.  
  • Very good writing skills in English, including ability to write clear and concise progress reports, analytical reports, plans and proposals.
