Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks a Research Scientist to join BCI’s Science Team. BCI is a distributed organization with staff across the United States with an office in Austin, TX. The Research Scientist can live anywhere and will work remotely.

The Research Scientist will join a dynamic organization and a highly progressive team of conservation scientists, reporting directly to the Director of White-nose Syndrome (WNS) Research. The WNS Research Scientist will work closely with the Director of WNS Research to support ongoing research efforts in bat conservation with an emphasis on work related to WNS. The Research Scientist will help lead rigorous scientific research, including analyzing existing datasets, writing scientific publications, submitting grant proposals, synthesizing knowledge to direct conservation strategies, and communicating research products with a diverse range of stakeholders via meetings and conferences. The WNS Research Scientist must be highly collaborative and enjoy working within an environment that is mission and results-driven, where they can bring their whole self to work and contribute to positive ecological and social change. This position is ideal for an early career scientist interested in applied data-driven conservation and working collaboratively to support research needs within the BCI science program.

Position Description:

The WNS Research Scientist will:

  • Contribute to BCI’s scientific research efforts in experimental design, data collection, data management, and result dissemination
  • Contribute to bat conservation planning and strategies using conservation evidence
  • Disseminate and communicate results of research in presentations, written reports, public outreach, and peer-reviewed publications
  • Collaborate effectively with BCI’s science and conservation teams and external partners
  • Contribute to grant writing

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Experience

  • Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as biology, ecology, wildlife, conservation, or a related field
  • Advanced proficiency in quantitative analyses, including the use of advanced statistics and statistical computing in reproducible and open science tools
  • Proficiency with analysis in R
  • Advanced proficiency in data visualization
  • Proficiency in scientific writing and written communication skills, including a strong academic publication record
  • Demonstrated interest in hypothesis-driven research, applied conservation, and conservation evidence
  • Proven success with managing multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and accurately with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize under the pressure of deadlines
  • Comfort and ability to work and communicate effectively in a remote work environment
  • Interest in engaging with different communities and developing opportunities that encourage and grow a diverse, equitable, and inclusive conservation science community

Preferred Knowledge/Experience

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and inclusively with multiple partners and team members
  • Familiarity with bat ecology, disease ecology, White-nose Syndrome
  • Familiarity and experience using reproducible and open research methods

Compensation and Benefits

  • $70,000 annually, full-time salaried. Paid biweekly electronically or via check.
