Wilderness Steward Program Organizer

As the Wilderness Steward Program Organizer, you will play a crucial role in supporting the effective operation of ICL’s Wilderness Steward Program. Your primary responsibilities will include assisting in backcountry trip planning, volunteer communications, data management, and collaboration with ICL’s external partners in this program, particularly the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park Service. This role will also aid the Solitude Monitoring Coordinator, a second contracted position, with the completion of solitude monitoring for the Cecil D. Andrus-White Clouds and Hemingway-Boulder Wilderness Areas.

Terms

This is a five-month contract position, averaging 20–25 hours per week. ICL will pay the WSP Organizer a monthly stipend of $3,000. For any partial month worked (e.g., beginning or ending mid-month), the stipend will be prorated at a rate of $100 per day based on days worked. The contractor will not be an employee of ICL, and is not benefit-eligible. This is a part-time contract located in Ketchum, Idaho. There are potential options for housing (if needed) at the Sawtooth Valley Work Center.

Position Responsibilities:

• Monitor and manage the Wilderness Steward Program email account, responding promptly to volunteer inquiries and providing updates as needed.
• Review and process Post-Trip Report Forms submitted by volunteers, ensuring accurate data entry and documentation and generating reports for review by the USFS.
• Research and compile educational resources for Wilderness Stewards, including digital materials for ongoing training and development.
• Coordinate with the Lead Wilderness Ranger (Sawtooth National Recreation Area) and the Solitude Monitoring Coordinator for the Cecil D. Andrus-White Clouds and Hemingway-Boulder Wilderness Areas.
• Support Solitude Monitoring Coordinator by helping enter, organize, and summarize solitude monitoring data.
• Work with the Solitude Monitoring Coordinator to keep the Solitude Monitoring
  Program/Protocols on schedule, communicate with volunteers, organize trips by zone.

Qualifications:

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Strong organizational abilities with attention to detail.
• Proficiency in data management and basic computer skills.
• Familiarity with Leave No Trace principles and the Wilderness Act of 1964 to help promote responsible recreation.
• Comfortable interacting with visitors to provide education on wilderness regulations and responsible recreation.
• Ability to hike long distances on rugged terrain, carrying up to 40 pounds or more.
• Experience using maps, compasses, or GPS devices to navigate in backcountry areas.
• Ability to camp overnight for extended periods of time
