Wildland Engine Operator

The Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands through the Department of Natural Resources is hiring a seasonal wildland engine operator in Grand County Utah. The engine operator for Grand County must reside near Moab (physical response time is no longer than 15 minutes).  Applicants must be available for paid on-call throughout the fire season, which typically starts June 1 and ends October 31.

This job requires training, physical conditioning, and mentoring of less experienced firefighters.

WAGE RANGE:  $21.48 – $32.36 per hour, based on firefighter qualifications, experience, and training.  On-call pay will apply from June 1 – October 31.  Potential for overtime and out-of- area assignments.

Requirements:

  • Ability to pass Work Capacity test at arduous-level pack testing (3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45-pound weighted vest).
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Basic Firefighter FFT2, FFT1, ENGB
  • FAL3 (S-212 chainsaw operator)
  • Shows interest in fire prevention and mitigation principles.
  • Is articulate and professional. Interacts well with the public, private landowners, local, state, and federal government representatives and co-workers.

Principal Duties

  • Perform natural resource projects and improvement tasks to reduce wildfire risk.
  • Perform wildland firefighting and related duties
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, or adjust specialized wildland equipment. Collaborate with other firefighters as a crew, squad, or engine member.
  • Transport personnel and equipment.
  • Lead or participate in safety sessions, briefings, and after-action reviews (AAR). Report and document accidents, injuries, damage, loss, or stolen equipment. Participate in training courses and drills to maintain knowledge of current firefighting practices.
  • Provide for the safety and well-being of subordinates or assigned resources.
  • Complete required annual training, mentor, assist, or conduct training as necessary.
  • Evaluate the size, location, and condition of wildland fires, protect fire origin(s) to allow for potential investigation, assess damage caused by fires, and prepare reports. Communicate fire details to superiors, subordinates/adjoining resources, or dispatch centers.
  • Educate the public about wildland fire prevention through activities such as exhibits, presentations, or the distribution of promotional materials.
