Wildlife/Elkins Operations Center  This position serves as a Wildlife Biologist focusing on data management, analysis, and human dimensions research, within the GIS & Technical Support Program, Operations Unit, Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Under limited supervision, the employee performs independent review, human dimensions surveys, and data analysis to support multi-discipline, regional, and statewide research, planning, and management. The employee reviews and develops grants and proposals to aid in Wildlife Resources Section work. This position applies scientific procedures, data analysis, and research support to agency staff and administrators involved in developing policy and management of wildlife resources. The employee prepares scientific and technical reports regarding findings and factors affecting natural resources. The employee utilizes their knowledge of fish and wildlife habitats and behaviors to offer sound scientific guidance and management recommendations. This position develops and conducts biological and social surveys to facilitate wildlife management for the citizens of West Virginia. The employee applies survey results in the development and implementation of management plans. The employee assists with planning documents and serves on committees for management and species plans. The position runs queries and provides data compilation to appropriately respond to legislative fiscal note requests within required time-frames. The employee works collaboratively with knowledgeable personnel to respond to the fiscal, biological, and policy impact of legislation. This employee presents findings at conferences, training, and seminars on studies relating to biological and social concerns in wildlife conservation efforts. The employee represents the agency on committees and organizations at the state and regional levels. This employee schedules, coordinates, and moderates meetings between the Wildlife Resources staff and various non-government organizations, stakeholders, and conservation agencies. Performs related work as assigned. Regular attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Master of Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in wildlife or fisheries management and biology, fish culture, conservation biology, natural resources, aquatic biology, botany, biological sciences or environmental sciences. Preference will be given to educational and field experience as related to specific job postings.

AND

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in wildlife or fishery management or related fields.

OR

Substitution: Doctor of Philosophy degree from an accredited college or university with a major in wildlife or fisheries management and biology, fish culture, conservation biology, natural resources, aquatic biology, botany, biological sciences or environmental sciences. OR Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university with a major in wildlife or fisheries management and biology, fish culture, conservation biology, natural resources, aquatic biology, botany, biological sciences or environmental sciences. AND Six (6) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in wildlife or fishery management or related fields.

Special Requirements: A valid driver’s license is required. May be required to obtain a commercial driver’s license. Skill in swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling, rock-climbing, rappelling and/or trapping may be required for certain positions.

PG:  19     $45,042 – $83,326
Market Rate: $73,417

Please note: Effective 8/24/24 the pay range for this classification will be $50,242 – $88,526.
