POSITION SUMMARY
The Wildlife Biologist plays a key role in the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County’s Natural Resources Department by developing and implementing wildlife management programs across the Preserves. This position is responsible for conducting biological inventories, monitoring populations of native and rare species, and leading efforts to plan and execute habitat improvement projects that support biodiversity. The Wildlife Biologist collaborates with staff, volunteers, and partner organizations; oversees wildlife management initiatives such as deer population control and nuisance species response; and contributes to long-term conservation planning for FPWC. The position supervises the wildlife assistant and may also supervise seasonal staff, interns, or volunteers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE JOB. Must have deep knowledge of wildlife management programs, thorough knowledge of the principles of ecology and conservation biology that govern wildlife management in northern Illinois. General knowledge of the methods used for surveying, sampling, tracking, trapping, and detecting wildlife. General knowledge of the flora and fauna and natural communities of northern Illinois. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, public speaking skills and time management skills. Ability to function independently and with minimal supervision to accomplish the duties and requirements of this position. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines and to manage multiple projects and activities occurring simultaneously.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE. Must possess a bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, wildlife management, ecology, conservation biology, natural resources, or similar program from an accredited institution. Master’s degree preferred. At least three years of full-time work experience, or 36 months total of qualifying part-time employment, directly related to wildlife management, with demonstrable experience in at least one of the following areas: working with threatened and endangered species; creation and implementation of wildlife habitat improvement plans; oversight of a public hunting or wildlife removal program; or extensive experience surveying wildlife in the field. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must possess, or obtain within six months of hire, an Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card, Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License, and S130/S190 prescribed burn training.
