Wildlife Biologist

The Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a dedicated and skilled Wildlife Biologist to lead big game management and research efforts. This position plays a key role in conserving wildlife populations through science-based management, habitat enhancement, and collaboration with tribal leadership, partner agencies, and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

• Plan, organize, and implement big game management programs within the Management & Research Section
• Design and conduct field studies, including population monitoring (i.e., aerial surveys), habitat assessments, and applied research
• Develop and implement short- and long-term management strategies for big game species
• Lead updates to management plans, including the mule deer management plan, and develop new mangement plans for elk and pronghorn
• Prepare technical and non-technical reports to support management decisions
• Present findings and recommendations to Navajo Nation government entities, partner organizations, and the public
• Supervise a Wildlife Technician, including field operations and data collection
• Coordinate with internal Navajo programs and external agencies on wildlife and habitat initiatives
• Design, implement, monitor, and maintain habitat improvement projects for big game species
• Evaluate habitat conditions and develop strategies to improve forage, water availability, and overall ecosystem health
• Lead field efforts in remote and rugged environments to ensure project success
• Prepare and submit multiple funding proposals each year to support program needs

This position is responsible for the conservation and management of:

• Mule deer
• Rocky Mountain elk
• Merriam’s turkey
• Pronghorn

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of federal, state, and tribal wildlife laws and regulations
• Strong understanding of biological principles, taxonomy, and wildlife ecology
• Knowledge of wildlife management techniques and field methodologies
• Familiarity with laboratory and field equipment, procedures, and data collection methods
• Skill in observing, identifying, and classifying wildlife species
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and public presentations
• Ability to think critically and solve complex management and ecological problems
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging field conditions
