Wildlife Biologist I – Wildlife Habitat Biologist
Compensation: $19 – $23 per hour DOE, plus competitive benefits
Fulltime (nights and weekends as needed) [Exempt / Non-Exempt]
Position Description:
This is a staff-level position that requires a self-starter, an excellent team player and someone that works well both independently and in a closely supervised setting. This position will require extensive coordination with the Wildlife Division Manager, Wildlife Biologist II and Fish and Wildlife Department Director to assist in project implementation of wildlife habitat restoration, mitigation of fish and wildlife resources, site management, and ongoing operations and maintenance of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho wildlife mitigation areas.
This position will assist in the mitigation of natural resources (i.e., Bonneville Power Administration [BPA]), project implementation of habitat restoration of floodplain/riparian processes and functions, assist in operations and maintenance of mitigation parcels, protect and conserve fish and wildlife on Kootenai Tribe of Idaho ancestral lands. Knowledge and understanding of wildlife biology/ecology, botany, plant propagation, and native habitat restoration is required. Proactively utilize ecological information to enhance riparian/moist soil communities, and ability to use nursery plants and weed control in habitat management. Excellent skills in communication (both oral and written), report writing, statistical/data analysis, organization, scheduling and implementation of natural resource surveys, and aptitude in ArcMap are required. The applicant must demonstrate work crew supervisory skills. Additionally, an understanding and knowledge of Kootenai Tribal history is a desired attribute.
Responsibilities & Qualifications:
Essential Functions:
- Develop, implement and evaluate restoration/methodologies to assess/analyze ecologically-based mitigation projects in the Kootenai River watershed.
- Organize, schedule and coordinate wildlife habitat enhancement and
- Assist and manage experimental protocols for research studies to assure that scientifically and statistically valid data are collected, analyzed and evaluated.
- Reviews environmental assessment reports and impact statements affecting area wildlife habitat and populations.
- Ability to create GIS (ArcMap) products, work with geo-databases, generate appropriate topology, and analysis of geospatial information.
- Assist and monitor multiple project-based goals and objectives, establish work for out- years, data quality assurance and control (QA/QC), and proficiency with relational
- Oversight of wildlife habitat mitigation sites and restoration, permitting, budgets, subcontractors and tribal technical personnel.
- Assist Wildlife Division Manager, Wildlife Biologist II and Fish and Wildlife Department Director in development of cooperative working relationships and agreements with local, state and federal agencies, and landowners to coordinate natural resource protection and compliance.
- Ability to think creatively, strategically, practically and work with a diverse range of individuals in program development.
- Assist Wildlife Division Manager and Wildlife Biologist II with review, analysis and supervision of Wildlife Division relational database.
- Supervises and trains employees in nursery operations, restoration activities, and collecting wildlife population and native and non-native vegetation data.

- Prepares progress and activity reports, budgets, and produce GIS maps, project updates/status to the Tribe, BPA and other agencies.
Other Duties:
- Assist Wildlife Division Manager, Wildlife Biologist II and Fish and Wildlife Department Director with community outreach and education.
- Assist Wildlife Division Manager, Wildlife Biologist II and Fish and Wildlife Department Director in preparation and tracking budgets, office organization, staff supervision and administrative support as needed.
- Assists in the analysis of Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) policies, rules, regulations and programs that may affect the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. This includes, but not limited to, Albeni Falls Wildlife Mitigation and BPA programmatic documents, BPA HIP, herbicide policies, BPA MOA’s, land appraisals, PSA and purchase requirements (i.e., 2016 BPA F&W Lands DeskBook).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Wildlife Division Manager and Wildlife Biologist
Qualifications:
- Utilizes professional knowledge of ecology to perform work and is familiar with the professions of wildlife and plant ecology, aquatic ecology and ecosystem sciences.
- Knowledge of wildlife/botany methods/protocols and statistical
- Knowledge of Pacific Northwest botany, wildlife habitat relationships, and key ecological correlates.
- Ability to gather a variety of scientific information, compile, interpret, and
- Knowledge of avian, mammal, invertebrate, and vegetation surveys/sampling, method/protocol and design.
- Knowledge of Indian Tribes and ability to work in a multi-cultural
- Ability to work effectively with Tribal staff, regulatory agencies, community groups, consultants, committees and the public.
- Ability to multi-task and work well under deadline
- Ability to communicate well orally and in writing
- Ability to utilize Microsoft Office software; word process, create spreadsheets, and develop presentations, etc.
- Ability to utilize relational databases and statistical software; web-based SQL processes, data entry forms, create spreadsheets, and statistical analysis (univariate/multivariate).
- Ability to utilize geo-databases and geospatial software; Google Earth and GIS file formats (DLG, DOQ, DRG, DSM), GIS processing tools, topology and attribute data information
- Ability to travel for work, attend out of town meetings, work during night and/or weekends, and work as needed to complete tasks on schedule.
- Ability to pass drug and alcohol test
- Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid passport within the 90 day probationary period.
Education Qualification and Experience:
- Requires a B.S. degree in natural resource management (or closely related field; see below) and 2 years of related professional experience OR a M.S. degree in natural resource management (or closely related field) and 1 year of related professional experience. Must have a valid driver’s license, be tribally insurable, pass drug test, and able to obtain a valid passport following the 90 day probationary period.
- A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources, environmental or natural resources planning, or a closely related field.
- Experience working for an Indian tribe(s) is
- Experience working in restoration, botany, plant and animal data gathering and analysis
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Work in office (50%) and outdoor (50%) environments; exposure to inclement weather; some climbing, hiking, stooping, and light lifting.
