Wildlife Biologist II – Wildlife Ecologist

Compensation: $24 – $29 per hour DOE, plus competitive benefits

Fulltime (nights and weekends as needed) [Exempt / Non-Exempt]

Position Description:

This is a staff-level position that requires a self-starter, an excellent team player and someone that works well both independently and in a closely supervised setting. This staff position will assist Fish and Wildlife Department managers with planning, development, and implementation of long-term wildlife habitat restoration, and manage research studies to evaluate and analyze ecologically-based mitigation projects in the Kootenai River watershed. Proactively utilize ecological information regarding floodplain/riverine processes and native terrestrial communities in the enhancement and management of fish and wildlife habitats. Excellent skills in communication (both oral and written), report writing, project budgets, statistical data analysis, botanical surveys, bird ID and vocalizations, terrestrial ecology, proficiency with relational databases, and aptitude in ArcMap are required. Ability to supervise, coordinate and work collectively with a diverse range of individuals and Kootenai Fish and Wildlife staff and protect and conserve wildlife on Kootenai Tribe of Idaho ancestral lands.

Responsibilities & Qualifications:

Essential Functions:

• Develop, implement and evaluate research designs/methodologies to assess/analyze ecologically-based mitigation projects in the Kootenai River watershed.
• Organize, schedule and coordinate wildlife habitat enhancement and
• Management of experimental protocols for research studies to assure that scientifically and statistically valid data are collected, analyzed and evaluated.
• Reviews environmental assessment reports and impact statements affecting area wildlife habitat and populations.
• Ability to create GIS (ArcMap) products, work with geo-databases, generate appropriate topology, and analysis of geospatial information.
• Assist and monitor multiple project-based goals and objectives, establish work for out- years, data quality assurance and control (QA/QC), and proficiency with relational
• Oversight of wildlife habitat restoration, permitting, budgets, subcontractors and tribal technical personnel.
• Assist in developing cooperative working relationships and agreements with local, state and federal agencies to coordinate natural resource protection and compliance.
• Ability to think creatively, strategically, practically and work with a diverse range of individuals in program development.
• Assist with review, analysis and supervision of Wildlife Division relational
• Supervises and trains employees in bird ID and vocalizations, collecting wildlife population and vegetation data.

• Prepares progress and activity reports, budgets, and produce GIS maps, project updates/status to the Tribe, BPA and other agencies.

• Assists in the analysis of Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) policies, rules, regulations and programs that may affect the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho.

Qualifications:

• Utilizes professional knowledge of ecology to perform work and is familiar with the professions of wildlife ecology, aquatic ecology and ecosystem sciences.
• Knowledge of wildlife/ecological research methods/protocols and statistical
• Knowledge of Pacific Northwest botany, wildlife habitat relationships, and key ecological correlates.
• Ability to gather a variety of scientific information, compile, interpret, and
• Knowledge of avian, mammal, invertebrate, and vegetation surveys/sampling, method/protocol and design.
• Knowledge of Indian Tribes and ability to work in a multi-cultural
• Ability to work effectively with Tribal staff, regulatory agencies, community groups, consultants, committees and the public.
• Ability to multi-task and work well under deadline

• Ability to utilize Microsoft Office software; word process, create spreadsheets, and develop presentations, etc.
• Ability to utilize relational databases and statistical software; web-based SQL processes, data entry forms, create spreadsheets, and statistical analysis (univariate/multivariate).
• Ability to utilize geo-databases and geospatial software; GIS file formats (DLG, DOQ, DRG, DSM), GIS processing tools, topology and attribute data information
• Ability to travel for work, attend out of town meetings, work during night and/or weekends, and work as needed to complete tasks on schedule.

• Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a valid passport within the 90 day probationary period.

Education and Experience:

• A minimum of five years of professional experience in the field of biology, ecology or natural resources (Master’s degree may be substituted for two year of experience; PhD degree may be substituted for three years of experience).
• A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources, environmental or natural resources planning, or a related field.
• Experience working for an Indian tribe(s) is
• Experience working in research studies on plant and animal data analysis

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Work in office (75%) and outdoor (25%) environments; exposure to inclement weather; some climbing, hiking, stooping, and light lifting.
