Part-time: 30 hours/week
Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday
8:00 AM-6:00 PM
Hourly Rate: $16/hour
About Us:
Wildlife Center of Long Island is a 501©3 not-for-profit Wildlife Hospital & Education Center founded in 1982, dedicated to the preservation of Long Island’s wildlife and natural habitats. We receive over 10,000 calls to our Hotline annually and admit over 2,300 injured and orphaned wild animals to our Hospital. In addition, we conduct education programs for children and adults to foster knowledge and appreciation for Long Island’s wildlife.
Job Description:
The wildlife rehabilitation assistant provides care for injured & orphaned native wildlife in our indoor and outdoor hospital setting. Duties include cleaning enclosures, preparing diets, feeding animals, assisting with medical treatments, and maintaining a clean and safe environment at all times. The assistant works alongside volunteers and licensed rehabilitators under the direction of the rehabilitation directors.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Maintaining a positive, professional, and safe work environment at all times
- Daily husbandry for patients including but not limited to: cleaning, weighing, diet preparation and feeding, enrichment, and any other special needs
- Adheres to medication and feeding schedules and other patient needs as they arise
- Administers care according to policies
- Maintains detailed and accurate patient charts
- Restrains patients for medication administration and medical treatments
- Cleans and maintains facility throughout daily shifts
- Minor building, repairs, and carpentry projects as needed
- Ensures satisfactory completion of all daily tasks
- Works cooperatively as a team member with staff and volunteers to ensure the highest standards in animal husbandry, safety, and sanitation within the hospital
- Handles wildlife in a manner that maximizes human & wildlife safety while minimizing stress to wildlife at all times
- Handles wildlife in the appropriate manner to minimize the risk of contraction of zoonotic disease
- Performs other duties, as assigned, to enhance the operation of the organization and improve the quality of life for animals in the organization’s care
Qualifications:
- Previous animal care experience, preferably with wildlife or in a veterinary hospital
- Ability to handle a physically and emotionally demanding workload
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Possess a genuine concern for the welfare of wild animals
- Ability to work indoors & outdoors in extreme weather conditions
- Ability to spend extended periods of time working on feet standing, lifting, and bending
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
- Ability to follow instructions and protocols well and work with minimal supervision
