ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Wildlife Technician performs various duties related to the operations of Avalon Plantation.  These duties include, but are not limited to the following:  

  • Work directly with the Property Manager to plan, cultivate, and maintain high-quality feed sources for wildlife.
  • Handle the mapping and recordkeeping for all food plots, duck ponds, dove fields, and brood fields.
  • Manage soil testing and application of amendments to improve soil quality and productivity.
  • Perform agricultural practices including harrowing, planting, mowing, and spraying.
  • Assist with lake management practices including liming, fertilization, and spraying.
  • Operate farm tractors to block, mow roads, maintain feed trails, and harrow layout fields with the Land Management team.
  • Operate heavy equipment to clear roads, rake, and pile debris for burning.
  • Operate ATVs and UTVs to assist with prescribed burning.
  • Perform daily property duties that include, but are not limited to, feeding horses and dogs, using chemicals to clear fences and control invasives, trapping, cleaning, and maintaining equipment, and running errands / airport trips.
  • Assist with maintaining grounds and facilities.
  • Handle firearms, particularly shotguns and rifles, and guide guests on horseback during hunting experiences.
  • Must be willing to work on weekends and during the holiday season.
  • All other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job does not have supervisory responsibilities.

 EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Farming / Agricultural experience is required.
  • Heavy equipment experience is highly preferred.
  • ATV/UTV experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience riding and working with horses is highly preferred.
  • Firearms and hunting experience is required.
  • Must have experience with horses and must be able to ride horses on quail hunts if needed.

REASONING ABILITY
The employee must be able to solve practical problems and the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS 
The employee must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
If positions require the operation of a vehicle, the employee must possess a valid Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment. The employee’s driving record must meet the standards and requirements of the Company and the Company’s insurance carrier.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • The employee must adhere to Company and Property policies and procedures, which are included in the Employee Handbook.
  • The employee must present documentation establishing both identity and employment authorization within three days of hire, pursuant to federal law.
  • The employee must undergo pre-employment drug test, (after offer is given but before applicant has commenced work). Random drug tests may be given throughout the year.
  • The Company operates as a drug free workplace. Smoking is limited to designated smoking areas only. Must follow the Drug & Alcohol policy covered in the Employee Handbook.
  • Must be prepared and willing to work during the holiday season.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, dig with various tools, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must be able to ride an ATV, UTV, tractor or horse for extended periods of time on uneven, rough terrain, and occasionally on roads and flat terrain while performing property duties. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to perform physical labor for extended periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to firearms, high, precarious places and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be alert and aware of dangers that are present while working in a semi-remote property environment. When required, safety gear will be provided and must be utilized.

The position sometimes requires working alone in remote locations; a communication device will be confirmed or provided. This position sometimes requires overtime and often requires work to be on the weekends or during holidays.
