Vermejo, a pristine, 560,000-acre property located in the northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, is seeking an energetic Wildlife Technician who is passionate about wildlife conservation and research to assist the Turner Institute of Ecoagriculture in conducting a project on predator ecology.

ABOUT THE POSITION
As a Wildlife Technician, your primary duties will be to assist with a study evaluating the ecology of cougars and the influence of black bear kleptoparasitism on cougar kill rates in northern New Mexico at Vermejo.

After appropriate training you will also be responsible for:

  • Conducting fieldwork.
  • Using data from GPS-collared cougars to identify and locate cougar kill sites.
  • Setting up cameras at kill sites to monitor scavenging.
  • Collecting information on prey and kill site characteristics.
  • Coordinating field activities with the graduate student overseeing field work and Vermejo staff and adjacent landowners.
  • All other duties as assigned.

ACCOMMODATIONS
On-property dormitory style housing with basic utilities (power, water, propane) will be provided subject to a Company Housing Agreement and Company policies.  

Qualifications:  
Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in wildlife management, natural resources, ecology, or a closely related discipline
  • At least 6 months of field experience conducting wildlife surveys
  • Highly motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Willingness/ability to work independently in the field
  • A valid US driver’s license (without restrictions)

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience using camera traps to monitor wildlife
  • Experience operating a 4×4 vehicle on two-track and gravel roads

You will regularly be required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, dig with various tools, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk; hear. You must be able to lift and /or move up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  You must be able to perform physical labor for extended periods of time, often outdoors under inclement weather conditions.  You may be required to hike for an extended amount of time.

You will be regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside and inclement weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. You must be comfortable, but alert and aware of dangers that are present while working alone in a remote landscape The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
