Worker, Carpenter Shop

As a member of Facilities Operation , possess a working knowledge of the carpentry trade and perform worker level carpentry assignments with minimal oversight. Performs duties independently and in a team environment, and assists journey level carpenters on large and complex projects. The incumbent always follows university rules and regulations, along with established university and departmental safety procedures.

The worker performs the following duties and responsibilities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The worker performs other duties as assigned.

• Safely and effectively performs a wide range of carpenter worker level shop and field tasks. Examples of this work include but are not limited to framing, installing sheetrock, trim work, as well as door and window installation.
• Assists journey level Carpenter Shop staff on larger, more complex projects and assignments.
• Ensures the safe use and proper care of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Assists in the handling and delivery of materials to project job sites.
• Cleans up tools and materials at day’s end or when work has been completed.
• Keeps the carpenter shop clean and maintains the dust collection system in good working order.
• Performs work for other trade shops based on departmental business needs.
• Effectively uses the departmental computerized maintenance management software (Maximo) to record work order completion data, including labor hours and work order notes and pictures.
• Performs overtime, after hours, and special events’ work assignments as necessary, based on departmental business needs.
• When necessary, the worker will be categorized as an “essential employee”, who will be mandated to work in response to campus needs. The most common of these is when snowstorms occur and the worker is required to assist the grounds shop staff for the removal of snow and de-icing of walks and steps.

• High School diploma or the equivalent
• Must have a valid driver’s license to drive University vehicles (vans/trucks)

• lift or carry up to 50 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday) and up to 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday).
• lift up to 50 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead and up to 100 pounds to waist height.
• use hands for simple grasping, pushing, or pulling frequently (34 – 66% of the workday).
• occasionally push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, lie down, crawl, knee stand, dig, or use hammer drills (up to 33% of the workday).
• frequently push or pull with forces up to 50 pounds, climb stairs and ladders, or reach overhead (34 – 66% of the workday).
• work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions.
• possess ability to work at heights, physical agility and full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance.
• Helpers and workers of all shops are also required to assist with removing snow using a shovel.

Note:  This position does not directly offer promotion to a higher level.  However, there may occasionally be higher level position vacancies for which a person with higher level qualifications may apply and be considered in the normal interview and selection process.
