JOB DESCRIPTION
IUCN has a long-standing and high-profile role on World Heritage, delivered via a World Heritage
Unit of specialised staff within the Heritage and Culture Team based in the IUCN Centre for Society
and Governance, and involving Union wide engagement on a wide range of issues. This work includes a
unique statutory role as Advisory Body within the World Heritage Convention, developing a series of
lines of action on World Heritage focused on the IUCN World Heritage Outlook, and the connection of
Nature and Culture. The main area of responsibility for this World Heritage Outlook
Coordinator will be to coordinate the third update of the IUCN World Heritage Outlook, planned for
2025. This will involve the following:
1. Ensure the timely delivery of the IUCN World Heritage Outlook update to strict deadlines through working closely and collaboratively with a range of partners;
2. Act as a focal point to engage with the Green List team to ensure harmonisation of methodologies and interoperability between World Heritage and the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas;
3. Identify, in collaboration with relevant colleagues, and engage with experts involved in the update of assessments (assessors and reviewers), and keep track of progress for all 266 natural and mixed World Heritage sites;
4. Consultation with key knowledge-holders throughout the assessment update process, including site managers, focal points for States Parties to the World Heritage Convention, Outlook Partner organisations, and relevant IUCN constituents, amongst others;
5. Lead internal quality assurance process for the Conservation Outlook Assessments (e.g. completeness checks, coordinating review and proofreading, preparing documents for Regional Review Groups and the IUCN World Heritage Panel);
6. Draft the IUCN World Heritage Outlook report in collaboration with colleagues in the IUCN secretariat (including World Heritage monitoring and evaluations colleagues, Global Communications Unit and others, as relevant), including data extraction and analysis, report drafting and coordinating translation;
7. Act as a focal point for liaisons with the external web developer to manage the content of the IUCN World Heritage Outlook website, the functionality of the online assessment module and the launch the publication of the updated conservation outlook assessments online;
8. Lead the management of the internal IUCN World Heritage contacts database;
9. Coordinate with internal Communications team to hold a launch event(s) and other relevant content (such as news stories etc.) to maximise outreach and impact of the IUCN World Heritage Outlook 4 report and updated conservation outlook assessments;
10. Lead the reflection and review process following the IUCN World Heritage Outlook 4 launch, including identifying future improvements for the next IUCN World Heritage Outlook update and strategic directions moving forwards.
