Position Summary

The Writer and Editor develops compelling, high-quality content about our successful program implementation around the world. The Writer and Editor will be expected to work across all of Creative’s Program Divisions — Education, Economic Growth and Communities in Transition — to produce stories, program descriptions and develop marketing content that describes Creative’s successful, ongoing work from Central America to Central Asia. It is a critical position in a five-person Communications Department that juggles multiple demands from across this mission-driven, social-impact company.

Reporting & Supervision

This position is based in the HQ Communications Department and reports to the Senior Director of Communications in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The position is hybrid with the expectation of reporting to the office three days a week.

Responsibilities

  • Write online news, features, profiles, magazine pieces and similar content in a journalistic style that showcases Creative’s work. The quantity of stories may range from one to four pieces a week, depending on length and demands from field programs.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues in the Program Divisions to identify ideas and develop them into stories
  • Guide the Program staff to develop blog topics, edit submissions and post them to the website
  • In collaboration with other team members, devise content distribution plans that leverage in-house and external platforms, such as social media, graphics and email newsletters
  • Provide communications support to Program colleagues in HQ and the field, including editing success stories, supporting social media content development, and occasionally reviewing reports
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to field communications staff
  • Work on multimedia packages, including preproduction (planning, logistics, consultants, etc.), field production and post-production (script writing, video editor, approvals, etc.)
  • Update printed marketing materials, online program descriptions and related materials
  • As needed, supervise consultants and freelancers, including videographers, video editors and copy editors
  • Fulfill administrative duties related to the Communications Department, including processing consulting agreements, invoices and related activities

Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations or a related field
  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in journalism, communications or public relations with a significant portfolio of published material
  • A portfolio proven writing and editing skills
  • Ability to identify content ideas, find interesting angles and tell stories in a compelling, accurate, authentic and respectful way
  • Understand how to interview people, particularly in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Ability to build relationships and establish rapport with colleagues, both in person and virtually
  • Ability to work independently and contribute to larger team projects
  • Excellent English verbal and written communications skills
  • Eager to work with a diverse group of colleagues from many countries and backgrounds
  • Availability to travel to international field locations in support of communications efforts

Desired Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in international development or international affairs, preferably in a communications role, is a plus
  • Familiarity with technical or government reports and how to extract stories from them
  • Knowledge of AP Style
  • Experience managing major social media channels as well as utilizing social marketing tools,such as Sprout Social
  • Experience planning, coordinating and carrying out video productions, including script writing, interaction with contract videographers and video editors is very helpful
  • Basic video editing, videography and photography skills are a plus
  • Experience with Airtable or other collaborative editorial planning tools/systems
  • Experience in Abode Creative Suite, including Premiere and Photoshop
  • Familiarity with WordPress website management system
  • Proficiency in a foreign language, particularly Spanish, French or Arabic, is helpful but not required

The Salary Range for this position is expected to be: $61,300-$68,000
