CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

The CUNY Graduate Center seeks an exceptional and experienced writer and visual storyteller for a part-time role as a Writer/Producer.

The Writer/Producer will write smart, engaging, and accurate news stories about academic research, scholarly books, awards, and professional accomplishments, and will shoot accompanying short videos for the web and social media, especially Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

The position reports to the Director of Communications and is an integral part of a content creation team that includes other writers and a Social Media Coordinator.

Ideal candidates for this role are seasoned journalists/writers and video content creators with superb writing and copywriting skills, a knack for conveying compelling stories through lively copy and videos, meticulous attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and social media savvy.

The Graduate Center is one of 25 campuses of The City University of New York, the nation???s largest urban public university. The school, located in midtown Manhattan, is one of the largest Ph.D.-granting institutions in the U.S. and offers nearly 50 doctoral and master???s programs.

This position is for 10-20 hours a week, with a maximum of 225 hours for the fall semester, 225 hours for the spring semester, and 175 hours for the summer semester. On-site work will be expected.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Report on and write captivating website news stories about our faculty members, students, alumni, and staff, with a focus on their scholarship and scholarly books in a range of fields, and about awards, grants, and other professional achievements;
  • Shoot and edit videos using a phone, Zoom, and the like that amplify news content and increase audience engagement on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, other social media channels, and the web;
  • Collaborate with Social Media Coordinator on video production and posting to social media channels;
  • Conduct interviews with scholars and authors;
  • Pitch story and video ideas to the Director of Communications;
  • Participate in weekly team editorial and brainstorming meetings;
  • Thoroughly research, edit, and fact check all content;
  • Assist with the layout and editing of e-newsletters;
  • Exercise the utmost professionalism in communicating with faculty, students, alumni, staff, and partners;
  • Handle sensitive topics and work matters with confidentiality and discretion;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 years of related professional experience in journalism/writing and video creation.
  • Experience reporting and writing in a journalistic fashion. Proficiency in digital writing best practices, SEO, and storytelling.
  • Experience creating Instagram-, TikTok, and YouTube-friendly videos using low-tech equipment???phone, Zoom, etc.???for high-impact results.
  • Excellent writing skills and news judgment.
  • Social media savvy.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Superior fact-checking skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with editors and researchers.
  • Knowledge of academic research.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and flexible environment with changing requirements.

COMPENSATION

$58.20/hr ??? 63.85/hr

Part-time employees must meet a weekly or semester work hour criteria to be eligible for health benefits. Health benefits are also extended to retirees who meet the eligibility criteria.
