Description
Position Title: Telemetry Technician
Position Summary:
The University of Idaho is recruiting a technician to conduct VHF telemetry on wild prairie rattlesnakes near Lander, Wyoming. The technician will conduct VHF surveys for tagged rattlesnakes, collect environmental data, and search for unmarked snakes. The technician will also have an opportunity to observe surgical procedures and assist in collecting morphometric data, blood samples, and scale clips. This position—which requires no previous rattlesnake experience—is a great chance to build proficiency in radio telemetry and experience in herpetology!
This project is management-focused, and the data we collect will be used to evaluate a rattlesnake relocation program and improve the way we manage “nuisance” reptiles. It requires strenuous, physical work in steep, rocky terrain, and technicians can expect daily hiking (up to 10 miles) in highly variable conditions. Our field site is subject to afternoon thunderstorms and may reach >100F in the summer. Working hours will be capped at 40/week, leaving many opportunities to explore Lander’s outdoor recreation activities. Rock-climbing, mountain biking, and fly-fishing opportunities abound!
Start and end dates are flexible for the right candidate; approximately May-Oct. Housing options are available in Lander (~10 minutes from our field site).
***All safety equipment and training will be provided—no rattlesnake experience necessary!***
