A bit about the role
As a Youth Counsellor, you will provide counselling to young people and families within Wyndham. You will draw on your expertise and experience in engaging at risk young people and will effectively tackle a diverse range of issues faced by the young people of Wyndham.
A confident presenter, you will provide presentations to the community and to Council staff, providing strategies on how to deal with issues related to mental health and improving wellbeing. As an innovative and creative thinker, you will keep to continually improve at the forefront of what you do – ensuring programs and sessions are tailored to meet the needs of local young people and families and are forged from evidence based research.
No two days are the same in this role, with responsibilities spanning from 1:1 counselling sessions, larger group presentations and assisting the wider team in running programs such as the Tuning into Teams program aimed at supporting parents. Your knowledge of contemporary best practice in the area of therapy, counselling and supporting young people will ensure successful outcomes. As this is a job share arrangement, you will be required to work Thursday & Friday.
What you will deliver
- Provide effective counselling, tackling a wide range of issues faced by Wyndham young people and families
- Assist in growing and expanding the counselling services provided by Council, to include adults, parents’ therapy etc.
- Confidently present to small and larger groups, raising awareness on how to manage mental health issues
- Successfully delivery great outcomes for youth and families within Wyndham, by ensuring targeted therapy and counselling services to meet local needs over a variety of mediums
- Efficient administration related to intake of clients, preparation of sessions, developing case notes etc
What you will bring
- Proven track record of effectively counselling at risk young people and families, leading to successful outcomes
- Substantial experience in family therapy, counselling and engaging at risk young people facing serious issues
- Solid understanding of how to manage trauma and how it affects young people and families
- Ability to work collaboratively and autonomously, being confident in your abilities and being able to provide advice to other team members
- A degree or postgraduate qualification in Psychology, Social Work or Counselling with a membership/registration with the relevant association
- A current employee Working with Children Check
