Position Title: Youth Education Coordinator Position Type: Salaried, exempt, benefited; .75FTE-1.0 FTE, depending on applicant

Location: Carbondale, Colorado – Onsite with flexible schedule and some work fromhome opportunities

Compensation: $55,000-$60,000 starting salary for full-time. Benefits include 75% employer-sponsored health plan OR  500/month health stipend, 15 paid holidays and 3 weeks paid vacation in the first 2 years, simple IRA retirement plan with 3%  employer match, gear and professional development stipends.

ABOUT RFOV

Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers (RFOV) is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote stewardship of our public lands by engaging our community in education, restoration and conservation projects. We work to foster a diverse and empowered community of stewards working collectively to create healthy and resilient landscapes. Serving the communities from Aspen to Rifle, RFOV mobilizes thousands of volunteers and students to work on projects in the areas of sustainable recreation, healthy landscapes, and fire adaptation. Our Young Stewards Programs reach over 1,500 youth ages 4-18 annually through stewardship-based programming. A large minority of our participants are Spanish-speaking or come from a Spanish-speaking background.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Youth Education Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination and implementation of the Youth in Nature (YIN) high school internship. Beyond the YIN program, the role also includes duties related to planning and implementing other RFOV field-based education & volunteer programming with a focus on creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable environment for all participants.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Youth In Nature Coordination (50%)

Program Outreach & Recruitment

• Schedule and implement the annual outreach timeline and strategies to share program information with counselors, students and community partners
• Manage YIN contact lists including email communication, phone calls, and scheduling in-person meetings
• Schedule and implement in-school presentations to various school/student groups for RFOV education programming
• Produce and distribute print and digital marketing and communications content including but not limited to flyers, videos, social media content etc.
• Manage and process YIN applications and enrollment information
• Oversee and facilitate the YIN interview process ○ Manage YIN assets such as photos, video, and student evaluation data

YIN Student/Parent Communications

• Act as the primary point of contact for interested students and parents/guardians throughout the recruitment, application and onboarding process
• Oversee communications with enrolled students and families
• Send relevant information to interested students, parents/guardians to notify them of upcoming programs, important dates and other information
• Communicate with YIN alumni and coordinate alumni networking events

YIN Partner Communications

• Communicate directly with YIN program partners to schedule dates, ensure partner programming/curriculum is in place and prepare for collaborative YIN sessions
• Prepare activity reports following each YIN session to be shared with funders and other YIN partner organizations

YIN Program Implementation

• Serve as lead instructor for the 4-day hut trip and monthly 1-2 day sessions through the academic year
• Support other core program operations and logistics as needed
• Coordinate and assist with student transportation to and from program locations
• Lead management and preparation of the necessary gear, tools, materials, food and drinks, etc. for each program date
• Develop and implement YIN alumni programming ○ Implement program evaluation processes, including but not limited to written surveys, gathering testimonials / program feedback and more

Other Education Programming (25%)

• Serve as the lead or co-lead instructor for youth projects and programs including service learning days, Spruce Up Your School, Adventure Stewards, Little Explorers, and library programming
• In conjunction with the Education Director, develop and strengthen relationships with education partners to expand the reach of Young Stewards Programs generally
• Support the participant experience leading up to and following a youth volunteer event: Communicate with registered volunteers and lead partner staff from pre-project details (e.g. registration and waiver information) to post-project follow-up

Other RFOV Volunteer Programming (April-October) (25%)

• Assist with pre-project planning logistics
• Oversee on-the-ground project logistics: coordinating travel, tool preparation, lining out project work sections, and project implementation and wrap-up on both frontcountry and overnight/multi-day backcountry projects
• Ensure project safety and practice effective risk management strategies
• Serve as an expert (Technical Advisor or Crew Leader) on various projects and ensure that project work is being constructed to quality standards
• Continually enhance expertise in trail and restoration techniques, crew management, and leadership
• Accurately measure project metrics and use internal databases to record metrics
• Ensure accurate and consistent photo documentation and organization of project work
• Assist in reporting systems on progress and accomplishments of all projects and ensure consistency and clear communication internally among RFOV staff
• Assist in keeping all project notes and details as well as partnership information
• Record time worked accurately and timely for accountability and grant reporting

Other duties as assigned – perform related duties as required for supporting and strengthening the mission and purpose of RFOV.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Passion for RFOV’s mission and vision
• Highly competitive candidates will show previous experience with one or more of the following: experience coordinating or leading programs for high school youth, experience with service-learning programming, experience in outdoor education
• Advanced Spanish language skills with ability to communicate risk management, technical project details, and support participants’ overall experience in the program
• Ability to proactively solve problems, work independently, and be creative and resourceful
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (writing, phone, presentations)
• Maintain Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or higher, as well as CPR certifications
• A commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff, partners, and participants
• Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds
• Ability to pass a criminal background check

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience in trail work and/or land conservation, restoration
• Experience working for or with public or private schools, youth-serving nonprofit organizations or other educational institutions
• Computer skills and data management experience (specifically Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Google Drive, and Salesforce)
• Demonstrate strong organizational, time management, planning, and logistical skills

Work Schedule

The weekly work schedule will be variable with regular weekends and occasional evenings required and is based on a 40-hour work week though some weeks may exceed this during the busy season.
